ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– Persons in the finance sector in the Virgin Islands (VI) can get ready for the BVI Business Banking Expo slated for June 6, 2024. The Expo is slated to bring financial institutions, the regulators, business owners, and entrepreneurs from across the territory to discuss the latest trends and innovations in banking.

The event aims to also offer advice to small business owners and entrepreneurs on navigating the banking industry, where residents of the Sister Islands are especially encouraged to attend the expo, according to Deputy Premier and Minister For Financial Services, Labour and Trade, Hon Lorna G. Smith, OBE (AL).

“By investing in our MSMEs and working with them, we are not just supporting individual businesses; we are laying the foundation for a thriving and resilient economic landscape,” she added.

Announced earlier in the year, the event is looking to showcase banking industry innovations and trends, offer valuable knowledge to small business owners and entrepreneurs, empower them with the tools for success and facilitate networking, and enable direct interaction between the financial sector and businesses, thus promoting mutual understanding and cooperation.

Hon Smith in a March 6, 2024, presentation in the House of Assembly said, “I expect this Expo to deliver substantial benefits to our community, including improved financial literacy for MSMEs so that they can make informed financial decisions; better access to financing, crucial for economic expansion; and the promotion of innovation within the financial services sector, leading to more tailored products and services for local businesses.”

Industry networking event

The event is expected to feature keynote speakers, offering insights into the financial sector's current state and future directions, MSME representatives sharing their experiences and strategies for obtaining financing, and industry regulators contributing insights from their vast expertise.

Banking institutions will also be present as exhibitors, presenting their offerings and engaging with existing and potential clients while bringing together key stakeholders. Hon Smith added that the BVI Business Banking Expo presents a unique opportunity to empower entrepreneurs and small businesses through crucial information and connections.

The event also aims to stimulate innovation within the banking sector and support economic growth by nurturing a cooperative business relationship between banks and entrepreneurs large and small.

Ms Lorna, please get those bankers to contribute to repairs to the Positive Action Movement Park which is in the banking district of Road Town. It is in a terrible state of repair with numerous benches broken or missing timbers, damaged lighting and trees and plant needing pruning. It is shameful that this park which honors on of our heroes and is enjoyed by both residents and tourists is in such a poor state of repair: it makes this country look Third World.

Of course we have the same shameful position in the QEII park where the children's play set has been closed for 4 years! My daughter is 6! She never got to play on it yet.

See also the Sunday Morning Well - another site of national importance which looks unloved and shabby.

Where is the City Manager? The Parks Authority? All asleep on the job, sucking the teat of the tax-payer. At least let private enterprise fill in those gaps so this place doesn't continue to resemble Port au Prince.

First off, the other three major Sister Islands need basic Banking Services to be available on island. In particular on Virgin Gorda the following are required:- Republic Bank ATMs with both withdrawal and deposit capabilities; CIBC FCIB ATMs for both withdrawals and deposits; 5-day In-person service at BPPR, as promised; National Bank of The Virgin Islands to have business presence to service customers and potential customers.

Who is the president of the bankers association? He or she need to be more visual and vocal and also work toward improving banking services in BVI. It seems banking gone backwards since the lady president at Scotia was the last president and I had attended one of the banking forum she had organised, it had help me a lot. All the banks need to work together as an organisation to come up with better products and services and regular forums to educate we small business owners, we really gone backwards

Will anyone be educating the staff who work at the local banks? This business owner finds himself constantly mired by the idiocy of the staff working at these banks. Is there any plan to move beyond the 1970’s format currently in place with still using cheques for so many things? When will retail banking in the BVI join the 21st century?

Can we find out if any of the bank managers in the BVI understand what a telephone is and how telephones work? Can we ask any member of banking management if they have any notion whatsoever of what the phrase "customer service" means?
