ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- After being placed on a list of 36 countries banned from Russia’s airspace, the [British] Virgin Islands, along with fellow British Overseas Territory Anguilla, has now found itself on a list of ‘unfriendly countries’ by Russia.

Russia has published a list of 43 "unfriendly countries" which face new economic restrictions in retaliation for sweeping sanctions brought in by the West, according to Yahoo News UK on March 8, 2022.

Vladimir V. Putin's forces have been trying to gain control over Ukraine for 13 days, but run into a number of logistical problems and a stronger resistance than they initially expected.

Sanctions have also been imposed by the UK, US, Canada and the EU, causing the Russian ruble to drop to its lowest ever value.

These have included sweeping measures against Putin himself, his ministers, oligarchs, individuals close to the Kremlin, banks, and key businesses.

Under the new restrictions being brought in by the Kremlin, financial trades, loans, and real estate purchases will need "special authorisation" if nations from the list are involved.

‘Unfriendly countries’ listed by Russia

According to Yahoo News UK, the list includes; United States, Canada, the EU states, UK, Jersey, Anguilla, British Virgin Islands, Gibraltar, Ukraine, Montenegro, Switzerland, Albania, Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, North Macedonia, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Micronesia, New Zealand, Singapore, and Taiwan (considered a territory of China, but ruled by its own administration since 1949).

It is unclear why the [British] Virgin Islands, along with Anguilla, has made the list when other British Overseas Territories have not made the list

Russian state media has portrayed the measures as a retaliation to the sanctions brought in, which have almost entirely cut the Russian people from international payment systems.

A number of credit card companies have also pulled out of Russia, including Visa, Mastercard and American Express.

The Russian economy could come under further pressures following reports US President Joe Biden is set to announce a ban on Russian oil and other energy imports.

The UK is reportedly set to join the US in the ban, and will ban the import of Russian oil gradually.

It comes after Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy issued a plea for the West to stop buying Russian oil, which has so far escaped sanctions.

VI should ‘stand against invasion of Ukraine’- Gov Rankin

UK-appointed Virgin Islands Governor John J. Rankin CMG had on February 28, 2022, said persons in the Virgin Islands, like in the United Kingdom and "across the western world and the democratic world" should stand against the invasion of Ukraine.

Regarding sanctions, Governor Rankin said he does not believe there is a huge amount of Russian money coming directly through registered companies in the Virgin Islands.

Sanctions against Russia

"But if there are we need to take action, if we didn’t take action that would be hugely damaging for the Virgin Islands because we need to be seen to be acting in solidarity with the people of Ukraine.”

The Government of the Virgin Islands in a statement on February 28, 2022, said sanctions issued by the United Kingdom (UK) against Russia apply in the Virgin Islands in the same form and rigour as in the UK itself.

"As such, participants in our financial services sector are being kept abreast of these sanctions and all updates to the consolidated list of sanctioned persons and entities. Where any requests for international cooperation is received, we also stand ready to execute these, such as where sharing of beneficial ownership information with overseas law enforcement can be facilitated in a little as one hour, if requested, under the Exchange of Notes with the United Kingdom Government," the statement read.

The chances of BVI Airways ever existing and it’s chances of flying to Russia are one in the same…zero!

If our shipping and airplane registry process was not so disorganised then there would be Russian planes and boats registered here - for once, the ineffectiveness of our Government has come to our rescue.

When I said the BVI had outgrown the mentality of its people so many had me to crucify. How many BVIslanders understand what is really happening in Ukraine. When Wichams Cay land was reclaimed the up street down street mentality was left in a daze and never was able to catch up with the plan. The only reason why BVI is of any concern to Russia is because of Financial Services...a subject that remains a mystery to the vast majority of locals. As much as we hate to hear the truth our crab in the barrel mentality and the oh how I love Jesus religious psychosis have left us in a coma pacified by a few pennies legally or illegally and clueless. If all the haters had any sense this could never have become our reality. Our country has become a fry in a pool of sharks.

Here you go again but atleast its not outright insulting oh never mind still insulting the mental capacity of Virgin Islanders.

Similarly Russia is very sensitive when it comes to unfriendly remarks insults and false statements that the west has gotten used to throwing around in the face of brown skinned terrorist. Weapons of mass destruction in Iraq false false false. Pure lies.

Now a days they don’t want us to believe slavery was bad and the UK still proudly will not apologize for its atrocities.

No way should Virgin Islanders who stand with black people should ever be involved with these avoidable military and economic conflicts with Russia.

The real most probable reason we’ve been put in the list of unfriendly countries is because our new white UK governor which is relevant in this topic. A man who came to the VI last year was quick to fly the Ukrainian flag at his office and proclaimed it to the world. I don’t see our politicians doing it just the UK appointed governor.

If they want to drag the UK into this fine but leave the Virgin Islands out of it. Number one black people have had many untrue propaganda campaigns targeted against us, youths still being locked up for cannabis despite the law our democratically elected government has passed.

we do not believe everything that comes out of western media. Covid boosters for children under 5 right? They’re not in the at risk group stop the propaganda.

Between the US & UK they told so many lies in regards to their own regime changes which were far removed from their borders that they have no moral authority to do to the Russian people what they’ve done to the Venezuelans.

Virgin Islanders are not sheep we are leaders and we have no place getting involved nor fanning the flames by citing morality. When the Uk negotiators met with the Russians before the fighting it was said to be a conversation of the blind talking to the deaf.

They are too used to being unapologetic and uncompromising that they’ve set Ukraine up through failed negotiations. Now they fold because
their bluffing for a non alliance country was ultimately not worth risking it all for.

They could have met in the middle ground of issues. They chose not to encourage meeting in the middle on behalf of this non EU non NATO country their not willing to risk it all for.

Those in authority can’t yet come to grips with how morally wrong it was for them to murder sexually exploit and enslave people based on skin color be enriched then turn around and say your not getting an apology in 2021.

Governor jaspert really went and opened Pandora’s box of unapologetic reality in the Virgin Islands after many people have made good on laying the carpet of moving forward over the stain of colonization & our history in the Caribbean.

At this time, or perhaps anytime, to be on this list by Russia is an honor...
Do we really want to continue to allow Russian money to flow via the BVI's "Trust" companies.
