ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Team racing took over at the North American Optimist Championship in Antigua, on Friday July 10, 2015, with Team BVI placing 12th in the North American Team Racing Championship.

Falmouth Harbour bustled with activity yesterday, when near 120 sailors invaded the bay, otherwise empty at this time of the year, to participate in the team racing events. The races had been scheduled to start at 10:30, so by 10 the first boats appeared at the mouth of the harbour and gradually filled up the bay.

The wind accompanied the sailors and the Race Committee, building up towards the late afternoon, and the 27 races in each course were completed in about 4 hours.

The Team Racing Championship comprises two parallel events: the North American Team Racing Championship, for teams representing North America; and the Nations Cup, for teams from other continents. There were 13 teams in each, a few of them first timers in team racing. Both competitions ran smoothly, starting and finishing almost at the first time.

The quartet of Max Reschiltoff, Kyle Roose, Rayne Duff and Nathan Haycraft finished 12th after suffering a loss to Bermuda, victory over St Lucia and then eliminated by the USVI.

The location of the course for the North American contest, next to the AYC marina made it easy for fans, supporters and passers by to enjoy a priviledged view of the races, especially of the finishes.

Emma Cowles, Luke Arnone, Zane Rodgers, Thomas Hall and Ripley Shilley, members of team USA 1, are the newly crowned North American Team Race Champions. They had lost race 23 against team 1 of US Virgin Islands, and had to go through the longer route to the finals (view grid ) beating fellow country team USA 2 and Netherlands Antilles, while ISV waited for them.

Already in the finals, the first race was for USA, but life was not going to be easy, as they had to face a strong and compact ISV team that would not allow them to take control of the race. In the third, however, USA lead the positions from beginning to end.

In the Nations Cup, it was Singapore who made it to the finals through the shortcut, winning race 23 against Argentina 1.

The race was a difficult one for Singapore, who finished tied in points but won the match because they hadn't crossed the finish in first place to get to the finals Argentina had to face their neighbours Chile 1, and the holders of the individual World Championship Title, Switzerland and only then arrived at the finals. Once there, Singapore made it clear that they were not going to give an inch away, and won the required two races in a row.

Individual Races continue todat, Saturday, the last day of the qualifying series. Sunday is the last day of racing and single day of final series, for which sailors are allocated to fleets gold, silver and bronze without mixing them (the first 54 in the ranking go to gold, the next 54 to silver and the rest to bronze).

the government of the bvi and the national sailing federation should take sailing seriously, its one of our strongest economy in bvi and getting kids in sailboat racing will lead directly to staff to work in this industry here in bvi, instead of all these Antigua, Guyanese, South Afircan and others working now.

bvi get with it, support youth sailing
