BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI- The newly erected bust in honour of the late former legislator and Sixth District Representative Omar Wallace Hodge at Baughers Bay has been vandalised.

The monument was unveiled at the opening of the Omar Hodge Fisherman’s Wharf and Park on April 26, 2021 in honour of the late legislator who as referred to as the ‘People’s man’.

A tribute to Mr Hodge written on the concrete base of the bust reads: ‘Here stands The People’s Man, a noble fighter and bridge across ethnic communities. He dedicated his life to all, from the hills to the sea of the District and once broke The Mace in our defence.

As long as the people live, his legacy will live on.’

‘So ridiculous’- Hon Maduro-Caines

The vandalised bust was reportedly discovered last evening, May 6, 2021, and has since sparked dismay among community members.

“This is ridiculous, not to mention heartbreaking to me. So many years trying to get this done. All I wanted to do is to create a place of relaxation for the people of D6. So ridiculous!” Sixth District Representative Hon Alvera Maduro-Caines reacted.

If they can kill a man who is already dead. Who these boys sitting down on the corners won't kill. Our government and the police refuse to remove them from the road corners.

Disgraceful, although the expensive bust looked nothing like him, whoever made it should give us our money back.

First and foremost, that park was constructed in a way that no one outside of that district would want to utilize. Why is it that the park's fencing was done in that matter? Two layers of fencing, one on the outer layer and one on the inner layer. You CANNOT see anything inside of the park. In a district known for gangs and so forth, why would you hide the park from the public? Was it more open where drivers passing by can see, I doubt that would have happened.

This was a great way to show respect to a fallen soldier who has contributed collosally, but it could have been a more significant thing than that. However it is accepted and appreciated.
My concern is this. You expect to get respect and give respect as a Politician, so dont come here now trying to give kudos to such a stalwart by saying things like,"Omar break the mace" in what defence of the people.
That was his second time that he should have been arested and charged. Tho i liked the man. We must be mindful where we show our support.

This was an upgrade for Omar Hodge. He looks like a clear skin of version of Ning and the bust should look so accordingly.

That design of the place and I heard that the burst of him did not resemble him and pers I believe he deserved something much better than that ( whatever that is ) the area should of been developed and put the fisheries with a decent wharf next to it and would OF serve two purposes , that would if really shown SOME respect to the man (.rip bro .

Oh well, Virgin Islands population are happy to have every damn thing named after politicians. In my country, politicians wouldn’t dare.

Gosh, here they even renamed a pier park that had only been named a couple of years earlier, branded, websited etc. only to slap the name of a politician that none of the Cruise Shippers will ever have heard of on top of it. All the fancy branding is out of date already and the sign posting is confusing. Some calls it the CYRIL B. ROMNEY Tortola Pier Park..some call it the TORTOLA PIER PARK.

At least the Pier Park is a pleasant place and has design merit. This Omar Hodge Park (it pains me to call it that) is a fine place if you’re idea of a nice hang out is somewhere you’ve got plenty of high concrete walls surrounding you... No one will use it for purposes it was intended for. At least the contractors will have got paid and can do something worthwhile around their houses with the proceeds.
