ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Information coming into Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) is that prominent businessman and local Philanthropist, Mr Peter Haycraft, OBE has died at the age of 88 this morning, Saturday, May 29, 2021.

Sources said he passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family.

Mr Haycraft migrated to the Virgin Islands (VI) in 1959 to run a ferry service between Tortola and St Thomas and has since made significant contributions to the VI community.

He served as Commodore of the Royal BVI Yacht Club on thirteen occasions and was one of the original organizers of the BVI Spring Regatta, now recognized today as one of the Caribbean’s leading sailing events where he was also credited with growing and developing the business environment in the VI.

Following the 2017 hurricanes, Mr Haycraft contributed substantial funds to rebuild Enis Adams Primary School (where his wife Mrs Penny Haycraft has worked as a teacher) into a state-of-the-art educational facility.

He also made sterling contributions to many worthy causes in the Territory.

I loved playing mixed doubles with Peter. He was so competitive, every point was like match point! He was gracious with praise when I managed to put away a volley. And, he was so full of energy I worked hard to keep up with him, 20 years my senior!
