Businessman calls for clearer focus on VI emancipation celebrations
'Difficult to communicate a clear, strong message'
Speaking on the UMOJA Programme on Thursday, August 13, 2026, Christopher said that while he supports initiatives to broaden the celebration, it is time to distinguish between entertainment-heavy “music fest” environments and the Emancipation Celebration event itself.
“It makes it very difficult to communicate a clear, strong message, especially at this time of year when emancipation celebration can be used as a teaching tool, and there are so many things that we need to communicate,” he said.
Christopher emphasised that the territory can and should host multiple events year-round, noting that more tourism events are needed and that not all of them have to be the same.
Call to prioritise local bands & cultural development
Christopher added that there is a need to restore the dominance of local bands in Emancipation programming and to create dedicated pathways for young performers.
“I miss the domination of the celebration from all local bands, the popular bands that we used to have, and giving young children, from an early age, a stage to perform and developing the writing skills, as other countries do in the region,” he said, pointing to regional models that nurture calypso writing and performance skills.
He linked this to broader cultural development, including the Miss BVI concept, and warned that without a dedicated effort to cultivate these areas, the territory risks losing opportunities to build its own entertainment ecosystem.
Balancing international acts with local acts
Christopher said he appreciates the international artist side of the festival and the mixed programming, acknowledging that people across the Caribbean are celebrating together.
“But it seems like we continue to make it heavily dominated by those themes, and then it seems like we miss out now on the time of our own development, and our own opportunity,” he said, adding that artists in other countries have benefited from governments that treat entertainment and music as a serious business.
He also issued a call to take local music and cultural production seriously, especially during Emancipation season, and to ensure festival programming reflects deliberate investment in VI’s own artists, writers, and performers.
