PASEA ESTATE, Tortola, VI- Ninth District Representative Hon Vincent O. Wheatley has suggested the Virgin Islands (VI) should reconsider the number of yearly public holidays as they are seen as a burden to businesses in the territory.

“I saw a lot of businesses are complaining about the number of holidays. I saw one today, because Monday is a holiday, and the person was complaining, ‘oh my god’, and I think they were saying this is the 15th holiday for the year so far,” Hon Wheatley stated during the Continuation of the Eighth Sitting of the Fourth Session of the Fourth House of Assembly (HoA) on November 24, 2022.

He said persons who are not business owners may not be interested in the topic; however, it is something that needs to be looked at.

There are 15 public holidays in 2022, including the Commemoration of the 1949 Great March and the Restoration of the Legislative Council to be observed on Monday, November 28, 2022.

There are 14 official public holidays listed for 2023 in the Virgin Islands.

‘An extra burden’

“Now if you don’t have a business, it may not mean anything to you. If you have a small business, well you would be scratching your head, a bigger business [and] you really scratching your head, because you are paying a lot of money without getting any extra productivity or any extra income.”

According to Hon Wheatley, a lot of businesses are “really starting to get irritated” since the business environment is really challenging right now “and I think they are seeing it [public holidays] as an extra burden. So it is something for us to consider.”

He suggested the VI could have more bank holidays instead of public holidays, “ where you don’t work you don’t get pay, but if you work you get pay, something like that.

“But I think with the holidays we have now is appearing to be a burden on some businesses…having to have dealt with the hurricanes, the floods, COVID, CoI, all of that stuff there, it is really affecting the businesses,” Wheatley said.

We need our Holidays. We are not slaves, you are a part of the problem. These holidays existed before just under different names - GTFOH with that! Businesses are only feeling the pinch now because of the hurricanes and pandemic....how come they were not complaining before?

Regular 14 public holidays a year.
12 paid holiday days a year.
12 paid sick days a year ( which many take sick or not)
38 days a year a business owner has to pay staff full pay for no work.

Assuming you had a business plan and knew what the heck you were getting into - none of this should be a surprise. There is a "cost to doing business" if you can't handle that cost and still make a profit, then you need to go back to working for someone else.

One Can’t predict sickness but maybe if that’s cut in 1/2 people would begin to take care of themselves or they can simply claim from social security for the 12 days????
We need our vacation days as per company policy and nothing is wrong with the holidays (check other jurisdictions).

And 327 days that anyone person must work and still businesses want more. Any extra holidays were can be attributed to the UK imposing them on us (Queen's funeral although we couldn't go, Queen's jubilee etc) nothing to do with the people of the BVI.

Well you are going on a very long holiday because we are irritated by your presence!

Then when the holidays come, You can volunteer to go to work for your white VG friends that sent you to open your mouth about this.

We have had no change in the number of Holidays. Only thing changed are the names and we swapped out some colonialist holidays and replaced them with our own! We might have one single extra holiday now! Nothing to “start to get irritated” for.

I hear that from a financial prospective but all countries have holidays.. this is nonsense in that if the business owners themselves were employees, they themselves will be happy for the holidays.. as others have said the holidays were always there from the beginning of time, just some names have been changed.

Why business owner do not complain about 6 dollars minimun wage????
With that mediocre salary and the high cost of their products they can pay more than 50 holidays.
    Abusers!!

My problem is not with the number of holidays. It is the fact that they kept changing! How many revisions did we make to the public holiday calendar this year? To damn many! It does not allow a business to plan properly, nor individuals to plan vacations etc.

You know exactly what is going on. Who's calling all the shots? Leading the people down the wrong path. All pagon holidays is a devil worship that comes with the devil rituals. I just don't understand the holidays these are clearly idols you all are worshipping. I rather exclude myself from all the porpaganda. These are pure distraction. What about the hidden side effects of the mRNA COVID 19 vaccine that is being covered up here. Some many deaths and sick vaccinated people. They are getting cold all the time my cousin had a cold for months and can't get rid of it.

When u can't find anything important to talk about u find any lil nonsense to nitpick at. What is irritating is these people who term after term sell a story during their election campaigns and fail to bring those promises to fruition after being elected. Then turn around and constantly implement rules laws and policies that continue to pile drive this country down in a whole worse than The Undertaker on WWF.

They work in their stores on holidays and Sundays alone, I'm sure they make more money than a regular day....This failure would have been better off to ask employers to give those employees who work the yrs with one two or no sick days an extra 3 or 4 vacation days with pay as a stay healthy and an availability incentive...

The cheap skate business owners is B****ing because they don’t want to pay Holiday pay and regular pay which they are suppose to do. If you work after 6pm they are suppose to pay night differential.

Employees need quality time off to spend with their families, and for personal rest and recuperation. Time off is part of employee compensation. Most businesses will close on holidays to allow employees time off to spend with their families. Businesses cannot operate just for their convenience; they must also think of their employee health and well-being. Undoubtedly, a public holiday increased a business operating cost but businesses defray their cost through income tax deduction. Government revenue will decrease. The public also suffers from lack of government services during a public holiday. Businesses have to look at the cost-benefit of opening during a holiday. They need to think about work-life balance.

You are definitely the problem. Earlier this year you said it wouldn’t be wise to raise the minimum wage because how it would affect the business owners. But you talking about a solution for them to cut people little money even shorter? Don’t look for a sit in the next election.
