ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Governor of the Virgin Islands (VI) His Excellency, Augustus J. U Jaspert told our news centre on Friday, March 1, 2019, that the British Government was happy that “democracy worked in the Territory.”

When pressed further on if the British Government wanted the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Government in power, as opposed to the allegedly corrupt Myron V. Walwyn led National Democratic Party (NDP1), he smiled and said again, “Democracy worked.”

While the Governor did not state that the UK was looking to have a change in Government, many interpreted his statement as meaning the British Government was happy for the change in the British Overseas Territory of the Virgin Islands (VI).

Local Brits Happy

Further, several British residents in the VI were happy for the change. A British resident named “Bob”—who did not want his full name to be used—said he had lived in the Territory for 14 years and was delighted and “predicted the election outcome”. Bob stated his view was that of many other friends and expats he had conversation with.

Meanwhile, many in the business community have also expressed similar sentiments of happiness because the government had changed after 8 years of the NDP regime.  They complained of too much interference from the NDP in the business community, too much conflict of interest and too much tax burdens especially on small businesses.

Business sector elated

Many business leaders and captains of industries speaking to our newsroom on condition of anonymity, celebrated once the VIP took power on February 25, 2019.

“I was happy as the bullying will be over and the ministers with their own business agenda competing against us,” a business owner told Virgin Islands News Online (VINO).

It is believed also that many in the various local communities, including the Spanish, Arabs and Caribbean nationals are also delighted with the changed of government. Once such person described their excitement by saying, “February 25, 2019, was Liberation day in the BVI.”

If De castro don't get the Deputy Premier position then it's fair to say she was used to pull the youth votes. Now no reward!

@Str8 Fronting, you and others need to stop creating problems where there are none!!!! The Premier already spoke on this matter. Allow him as the leader of government business to arrange his team the way he sees best to take our country out of the mess the NDP government has left us in!!! We have had enough nonsense from persons with very little understanding but large quantity of ignorance...furthermore, having the highest votes at large DOES NOT qualify anyone to be Premier nor Deputy Premier nor a Minister, what is does, is qualify them to sit and SERVE in the HOA. The last administration, the person with the highest votes at large was neither Premier nor Deputy Premier!!! It is an honour to have the young lady in the HOA and I am certain she will do her very best where she is and work in any other capacity that the Premier and his cabinet sees fit. Also, do not forget, that development is also needed, I am not saying being young means you are not developed, but it is a process...allow the young lady to get herself establish in the political arena where she can contribute in a meaningful way. Everything takes time and proper leadership. Allow the Premier and his team to organize the best way they see fit to work together to get our territory out of the mess we are in!!! Have a productive day...

Only ministers can get the DP position. She is a Jr Minister.
She was on the VIP ticket four years ago. She is a team player and the Premier values her contributions to the team success. She is appreciative of where she is and her accomplishments. She takes her position and the confidence of the youths in her abilities seriously and will be a force to be reckoned with on their and the people of the entire Territory behalf.

The VIP is a team and will move as such!

For God In Heaven Sake - Go Sit Down!

From the third won’t mind, we welcome Frazer as Deputy, it’s about time. He needs to re-join VIP where he belongs and fulfill his duties as Deputy. Don’t debate me either. That’s my opinion, everyone entitled to theirs.
