SLANEY, Tortola, VI- There has been an increase in burglary in the Virgin Islands, as reported by the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF); however, burglars went to a new low last week when they entered a church in Slaney and removed a number of equipment.

According to reports reaching our newsroom, the burglary occurred sometime between Thursday, October 19, and Friday, October 20, 2023.

The church that fell victim is reportedly the Sweet Redemptive Seventh-day Adventist Church, which is currently undergoing an expansion.

Our newsroom was told that items taken by the burglars include audio and video equipment.

The RVIPF has since confirmed it is investigating reports of a burglary at the church.

"The RVIPF can confirm a report received of a burglary at Sweet Redemptive Seventh Day Adventist Church in Slaney on October 20, 2023. Police responded and conducted inquiries. Investigations are ongoing," RVIPF media liaison Akia L. Thomas told our news centre.

Increase minimum wage and improve cost of living and maybe you'll see a difference.
    • @ The System (24/10/2023, 08:52) Like (1) Dislike (1) Reply
Increasing minimum wage will have a negative effect on cost of living. Businesses operational cost will increase and the would likely increase the prices on everything. So not ultimately those and minimum wage will feel it worse. And even some people who you would think should be comfortable will be feeling the pain of that decision.

However if they can find a way to lower duties significantly for businesses that sells stuff that the low income earners have to buy regularly example food, fuel for the vehicle, stuff to clean your homes.

      More specifically supermarkets, gas stations.

What would happen everyone will enjoy a better quality of life because cost of living will be some what easier.

We keep believing that what is going on is all economics. It is not. There are countless amount of people who are living with the minimum wage but are not stealing, robbing or doing anything immoral but still survive. There are also people with big houses who can wear expensive clothing and a fat salary every month but are doing evil things and are not satisfied with what they have. They are in financial and other problems. The thing is we should learn to manage what we have. Do look at what other people have cause you just don't know what they to get there. We should teach other children to value themselves and what little they have instead of buying name brands for them because their friends have them. The BVI is not above any other countries but it is a place where persons from all over the world could come and find a job even or is to wash dishes or clean a building while some people are crying out that the youths can't find jobs so they are turning to crimes. As Insaid teach our youths to value themselves and what they have.

Member from the church should be questioned. Someone is trying to start a business or keep one going. Instead of buying equipments they’re stealing

When the Bible stated “ Thou shall not steal” it indicates the choice is so. Therefore, those who do will pay the consequences. Let’s see a generation of families stealing until death, and they generation do the same. The people should pray, that those equipments never work, and they cannot sell them.

The thieves indeed have reached a treacherous, despicable new low, for the church is a sacred and revered institution. It is sacrilegious to defile it, is it not? But is the crime wave happening because of lack of skills, poor education, lack of job opportunities, low wages, keeping up with a lifestyle, laziness? Scholarly studies of crimes have asserted that communities plagued by prolonged pervasive high unemployment are also plagued with both violent and property crimes. Is the BVI plagued by prolonged and pervasive high unemployment and if so what type( s) of unemployment, ie, frictional, structural, or cyclical? What is the approach to solving the problem, ie, a)treating the symptoms or b) finding and fixing the root cause(s)? Often law enforcement treat the symptoms, ie, using the broken window theory to solve crimes instead of finding the root cause(s). Undoubtedly, crime is a security, safety, quality of life, and standards of living, etc issue that is attacking the community like a cancer. And as cancer it cannot be attacked and eradicated by just treating the symptoms but rather attack with various options to find and root out the root cause. This rise in violent and property crimes will require an all hands on deck effort. The police needs to operate in a professional manner, for it is an open secret that the RVIPF leaks a sieve. Fix the friction in the force among the small cadre of local officers, white UK officers, and sister Caribbean islands and other officers..A house divided cannot stand; it will collapse under its own weight.

@Bush Professor, Manda School graduate hmmmm! Is that school still enrolling? You are making an intellectual argument about this crime wave, especially not just depending of treating the symptoms in solving the problem. In problem solving, finding the root cause is the prudent step and rooting it out is the best practice. Too often though, we treat the symptoms and celebrate our actions as success only the problem (s) to resurface in the short -term. This approach is fools gold, which provides temporary comfort, security, etc. Broken Window Theory??? The RVIPF must regain the trust of the community. A first step is “fixing itself” ie, fixing friction among sections of the Force. The RVIPF cannot effectively serve and protect the community until it fix itself. This requires strong, effective, experienced leadership and management. Depending on positional power is not strong and effective leadership. A good leader leads by example, setting the tone of the organization, etc. Leadership is more about than skills.

So many Issues in this place..1/ our govt don't love and care about people, can't get water, things are very expensive to offer the suffering people a relief is as easy as extending or increasing the tax exemption amt from $10.000 to $18,000 just for those that making less than $30.000 per yr. ..2/ Our Govt is dishonest, they kept lying to us..3/ Thief usually plan and know what they going for, most times its an inside job or information coming from the inside..4/ We need more police presence and better detectives.. 5/ Criminals are not taking the govt or the police serious that's why a short Britain take over was needed to bring some seriousness, steadiness, honesty, accountability and respect back to the country. As it is now we are sinking slowly .

Being in possession of stolen property is a crime. The person/s doing the stealing will either try to sell them locally or try to sell them off island. Please be aware. This is either an inside job or an outside job....but my suspicion is that someone who attended the church recently did not go there to pray.
I pray that the thief will repent before it is too late...just a reminder God sees and know even if no one else does....you will reap your reward.

    "Sad they reached the church"

As a young person out here you are on your own. I see that. No police help. Sometimes it takes reaching the church for you all to realize its a everyone problem not a problem exclusive to young black males. These types of things will eventually hit everyone if we stay on this track.

    Not to mention the economy...

of a vacant 'church' on the side of a hill above a main highway with no car park is not a very secure building decision or structure. Easy access, easy getaway, easy for thieves and it will be burglarized again unless it is noticeably occupied 24/7.

We can sit around typing bull$$$t all day and ignore what is happening on the ground. The Premier said the economy is not in a slump, well let him continue to think that and keep it business as usual. Things will continue to spiral downhill because people are desperate and living in the BVI is like trying to survive in California with the prices of everything. Many people are doing things that they're not proud of, legal or illegal to make ends meet and we sit around praying, hoping, singing that all will be well.

"Thou shalt not steal ", should be applicable across the board, and not just for a few bandits, who stole from a seemingly qualifiable, "place" of worship!

Today's thieves, usually appear in the corner store grocer, who overcharges for their products; the legal fraternity, who overcharges in the rendering of justice; the misplaced physicians, and their over priced, fake medications, that first, render harm, and in may cases,do very little good; the crooked realtor, who inflate prices, to make the quickest dollar; the greedy politicians, who, for many years, have used their position, to take lands, real property, and other such irreplaceable valuables, in order for biggest gains!

I can go on and on with the varied and colorful " thieves", in this country, but the gist of the message is:THOSE OF YOU, without sin, CAST THE FIRST STONE!!

have chosen to cultivate on its once Blessed soil,an excessively large dominant pervasive human presence, damning their Vigjn Islands to merge and marinate in the degeneracy of a social and economic cononundrum of never ending failures.
