BELLE VUE, Tortola, VI – The Nottingham Bulldogs marched emphatically into the finals of the Dr. Irad Potter Basketball Christmas League Division Championships when they overpowered the Wash 62-61 at the Belle Vue Gym last evening, January 22, 2014.

After being down by as much as 5 points near the end of the first half of the game, the team mounted a spirited comeback to capture the best of three playoffs against the Wash.

Cedric King (20 points, 13 rebounds) and Kevon S. Lettsome (17 points 10 rebounds) led the Bulldogs to the finish line despite a late and almost effective push by the Wash down the stretch.

With some unexpected heroics, the Wash’s Nathaniel Malone, who had a game high of 21 points, poured in back to back 3-pointers in the closing seconds to almost snatch a comeback for his team.

Malone was fouled on a 3-point attempt at the end but couldn’t sink the third basket on the foul line to make the follow-up three that he sank count for a push into overtime. Sean “Chino” Woods and Shamoi Dagou both had 17 points in the team’s loss.

Bulldogs coach, Vince N. Pickering commented that he let his team know that all they had to do was slow down the game and get the ball inside.

Noting that his team was short staffed, Pickering said, the win was very important as at this stage of the league some key parts of his team had to travel back to school while others were out due to injury so the team was down by about four main players.

He praised Lettsome for his key plays on both ends of the floor and also singled out Asiv Beazer (9 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists) for knocking down jump shots and helping to control the game. He also noted that King was instrumental on the boards and for the team’s inside game.

Meanwhile, an all-round team effort later secured victory for 49th Street as they defeated the Oddz 61-56 in the first game of a best of three playoffs to decide which team will face the Bulldogs in the Finals.

David Lettsome (15 points, 7 rebounds) led 5 players in double figures as Asheed Frett and Jahmal Rabsatt shared 13 points each and Eustace ‘Boss’ Freeman and Gavin Frett both had 10 points.

Coach of 49th Street, Wasi Charlesworth, said his team came back and played good defence with the hustle despite making a few turnovers earlier in the game.

He credited ‘Boss’ who had a game high of 8 rebounds coupled with 2 blocks and 10 points, as being key to the team’s victory.

Committee Member Vancito Pickering said the games were very competitive and well played and the best teams won.

There will be an exhibition game this Friday, January 24, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at the Belle Vue Gym after which the division championships will resume with game two of the Oddz vs 49th Street.
