ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Over 600 votes were received via text and Facebook messages for UMI's Prom makeover contest, with sister Marlene Smith and brother Joseph from the graduating class of the Elmore Stoutt High School receiving the most votes.

Class mates and friends voted for the Smiths to receive a makeover from UMI, which was opened to all fifth form students throughout the Territory. The two will have all their prom expenses being taken care of by UMI Fashions.

Speaking to Deborah O’Neal, owner of UMI Fashions, she said that during the voting process she did realise that the persons receiving the most votes, both male and female, carried the same last name. She added that as a result of investigations, she found out that they were brother and sister but there was nothing she could have done, because the students voted for them.

Now the winners are chosen, Mrs. O’Neal said the preparation period begins.

She stated that the first step is to do an assessment of the winners and take measurements.

“At the end of the day it’s their prom so we are just going to sit down with them and ask them their preference in different things, because at the end of the day it is our job that she looks beautiful and confident while being comfortable. This goes for the guy as well.”

This news site learned that the makeover does not only deals with the prom but it starts the day the winners are announced.

Mrs. O’Neal noted that following the announcement of the winners of the makeovers, at every appearance leading up to their prom night, people will notice little by little makeover changes with the winners.

O’Neal stated that the makeovers will help both UMI Fashions and the Smiths in a sense of giving the winners an avenue to look their best and showcase their potential to other class mates, as well as, to show that UMI still cares.

“UMI has always been community minded and we are always looking for ways we can help out in the community. This is an investment in our young people and our future, by showing them that slight changes can go a very long way.”

She said by seeing the regular look of both winners every day, it will be easy to spot changes as they are made. “We are pulling out everything we can do to ensure that both of the makeover winners look the best and are the show stoppers.”

Both Joseph and his sister said they were shocked when their names were announced as the winners, and they are thankful.

“I was shocked because I didn’t know anything about the competition,” said Joseph.

Meanwhile, Marlene Smith said she expects a big change from the experience. She added that she knows that UMI will do a great job in making her beautiful and different.

The Elmore Stoutt High School Prom will be held on June 30, 2012 at the Bat Cave.

Debbie at least you do not have a case where you have to do cosmetic surgery or work miracles...the two should not be hard to makeover as they have some basic things going for them…

what I will like to see as a young parent of two girls is that UMI work with the school and graduates to help determin what kind of dress is 'Unacceptable' and not to waer to these proms..... In other words dresses for the ladies that is deem "acceptable" for the event!!! My point is, we don't want somebody to spend a lot of money on a dress and then show up and there be an issue..my two cents
