SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador- The [British] Virgin Islands grabbed two bronze medals on Day 2 of Track and Field events at the 2023 Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in El Salvador on July 3, 2023.

Strongman Djimon L. Gumbs captured the first medal for the Virgin Islands at the 2023 CAC Games with a bronze medal in the Shot Put and Sprinter Rikkoi A.R. Brathwaite added another bronze in the 100m Final.

Gumbs secured his medal with a distance of 19.00m, achieved in his third attempt.

Uziel Munoz of Mexico took gold with a throw of 20.81m and Jairo Moran, also of Mexico, claimed silver with a throw of 19.18m.

Virgin Islands Eldred Henry placed sixth, with his best throw of 18.12m.

Djimon and his brother Diamante will be competing in the Discus final on Wednesday, July 5, starting at 6:55 PM.

Bronze for Brathwaite

Meanwhile, Brathwaite secured his podium finish in a time of 10.26 seconds in the Men’s 100m Final.

The gold medal was won by Emanuel Archibald of Guyana in a time if 10.24s.

Jose Gonzalez of the Dominican Republic took silver in a time of 10.26s.

Brathwaite had won his heat in a time of 10.29s.

In the Women’s 100m event, Beyonce A. DeFreitas was 4th in her semi-final heat in a non-qualifying time of 11.84s.

VI Athletes in action today

Deya Erikson will be competing in the Women’s 100m Hurdles semi-finals, starting at 5:45 PM and Jaleel N. Croal will feature in the Men’s 200m semi-finals from 5:00 PM.

    I cannot understand how Brathwaite don't have a silver when he and the other guy finish same time.

      Review of photo finish by the officials showed that the DR athlete was slightly ahead with his lean.Great run by Braithwaite.Still made country proud.

    I also cannot understand why Brathwaite did not received a silver if he and the other guy ran the same time. That's very unfair to me. I guess is because he is from the BVI and not America.
