British Virgin Islands launches a new awareness campaign to protect the island’s natural resources

The Virgin Islands is well known for its natural beauty.

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – A new awareness campaign entitled “The Natural Wonders of the BVI” has been launched by the British Virgin Islands (BVI) Tourist Board and the BVI Conservation and Fisheries Department to encourage the territory’s residents and visitors to join in helping them to protect the islands’ natural beauty.

The campaign provides information on the importance of the BVI’s marine environment and educates boaters on the precautions they can take to enjoy the scenery while preserving it.

Using the accompanying slogan, “Help us save the natural wonders of the BVI,” the campaign educates the marine community about the BVI’s most important natural resources such as coral reefs, sea grass meadows, beaches, mangroves, fisheries and turtles. It also acquaints them with the BVI’s marine laws and illustrates good conservation practices that can be applied while navigating or practicing water sports.

“Tourism in the British Virgin Islands depends heavily on marine-related activities. Every year, we receive hundreds of visitors who arrive via yachts or to sail in chartered vessels to enjoy the natural wonders our islands have to offer,” says Hadassah Ward, Tourism Director at the BVI Tourist Board. “We created this campaign to show them how to appreciate the beauty of our marine environment, while enlisting their help to protect our natural resources.”

This awareness campaign includes communication pieces such as bilingual (English and Spanish) brochures and posters, e-cards, editorial columns and Internet ads. The brochure will be distributed twice a year at all marinas in the BVI while the poster will be available at all Customs and Immigration offices and ports of entry around the territory. Both pieces will also be available at all charter businesses throughout the BVI.

The initiative is an extension of the Marine Awareness programme launched by the British Virgin Islands' Conservation and Fisheries Department who teamed up with a Tortola-based publisher to publish a Marine Awareness Guide and website: (www.bvimarineawareness.com), which expands on the information already offered in those pieces.
