ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – A rain swept A.O. Shirley Ground awash with puddles reduced the Terry Evans League encounter to a near farce, but not before the Wolues had adapted to the conditions and romped to a 5-1 win over the Ballstars on Sunday December 4, 2011.
The game started under clear skies with just a hint of storms and in under 5 minutes, the Wolues had gone ahead thanks to a gravity defying Marc Savage.

A free kick from the right wing was floated high into the box, no Ballstars defender met the ball and as it bounced high, Savage positioned himself perfectly to score with a bicycle kick past the helpless Troy Cesar.

“A great goal and a great feeling,” stated Savage.

A bicycle kick or scissor kick is a physical move made by throwing the body up into the air, making a shearing movement with the legs to get one leg in front of the other without holding on to the ground.

No wonder then that Savage was later to leave the game having fallen to the ground screaming in agony and clutching cramped leg muscles!

Although stunned, the Ballstars battled back into the game without much luck and there were no further additions to the scoring until the second half.

The first of several heavy rain showers had arrived before the break and conditions were steadily worsening as substitute Tom Bridgewater scored the first of his hat trick to make it 2 nil.

The Wolues were adapting to what could be described as “typical English” conditions and soon added a third through Matt Moss.Boyd Van Kucyk took a quick throw on the left to Savage and his cut back fell invitingly to James Shearman 20 yards out. His first time pile driver was too hot to handle for Cesar and Moss was first to react to the loose ball, firing home from close range.

The Ballstars continued to battle, looking for a way back into the game and as tackles became more desperate, the Wolues broke from within their own half to score their 4th.

Gareth Watkins playing a sublime through ball into the path of Bridgewater, made no mistake with his powerful driven shot.

It was Bridgewater again who scored the 5th and completed his hat trick, but his shirt lifting celebrations were cut short, gaining a second yellow card and a red from Referee Carl Barrett.

Shearman struck a 6th and then the Ballstars perseverance paid off when they were awarded a penalty. Christopher Telemaque being brought down in the box by Alvin St Ville to give Trevor Peters the chance of a late consolation and his first goal of the campaign.

He made no mistake, beating Will De Hoo inside his left post.

“A disappointing result, but good to get on the score sheet,” said Peters. “Hopefully each game coming I will be able to score more.”

He went onto to describe the conditions as “Slushy, Slushy, Slushy, rain made it real slushy and it was difficult to get the ball under control. Both teams faced the same though so we can’t blame the conditions.”

It was the first points of the season for the Wolues and came as a welcome relief following two strong defensive performances that had resulted in two defeats.

“Ecstatic feeling, to be honest,” commented Captain Shearman, “the early sending off was an advantage for us as was the slick surface. We played some encouraging football, got the ball down and passed the ball around well.”

The Ballstars have a lot to do if they hope to achieve the success of their cup exploits, but are missing a few key players from their lineup. It remains unclear just when those players will be available and in the mean time they need to work on their tactical build up play and discipline at the back.

The conditions were terrible for football, but the Wolues used their experience to make the best of the situation, allowing the Ballstars to come at them and then hitting them on the break.
