ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Mothers concerned about gaining weight due to pregnancy should be excited to know that they may not have to worry too much about expensive gym membership or starving themselves, as the secret to shedding those extra pounds is in the win-win situation of breastfeeding.

“Breast milk is the best option for a newborn and we want to encourage and support mothers to give their children the best start in life.  We know breast milk offers protection against diseases, it promotes bonding and nurturing and it helps the mother to lose the extra baby pounds, Chief Nursing Officer Ms Jacinth Hannibal has said.

Hannibal informed that the Ministry of Health and Social Development is re-introducing the baby-friendly initiative of breastfeeding and will be hosting a Facebook LIVE panel discussion on the subject.

LIVE panel discussion

The LIVE panel discussion is slated for Monday, October 2, 2023, at 2:00 PM and will discuss topics including the benefits of breastfeeding, considerations that expectant mothers should make when deciding to breastfeed, supporting new mothers, postpartum, preparing for delivery and initial breastfeeding, as well as challenges and successes.

“We will also be hearing from a mom and breastfeeding advocate who will speak on topics about life as a breastfeeding mother, going back to work, work environment and some success and challenges,” Mrs Hannibal said in a Government Information Service (GIS) press release on September 28, 2023.

The panelists include Lead Physician at the Nurse Iris O’Neal Community Clinic Dr Shana Kay Fraser; Director of Community Nursing Services Ms Ferrosa Roache; Nurse Manager, Women’s Health Ms Angela Rock and a breastfeeding mom advocate.

“We all know that breastfeeding is best for mothers, baby, and the community,” Ms. Hannibal said. “We are re-introducing the baby-friendly initiative and we chose this forum so that we can present a strong case for breastfeeding support,” Hannibal added.

This is not true - the body will retain fat stores precisely for the purpose of breastfeeding and there are several other hormones involved which make it even harder to drop the weight.

Breast is still best but let’s encourage mothers to breastfeed without spreading proven myths….

      @ do your own research
When the hormones is released at the right time , the weight will keep in balance. When the estrogen is higher the weight is in-balance.

It's obvious you have never breast fed. I lost more weight breast feeding than I did in the gym or on any diet
