NORTH SOUND, Virgin Gorda, VI- The owner of the secluded Biras Creek Resort on Virgin Gorda, Mr Bert Houwer, has passed away, according to reports reaching Virgin Islands News Online.

Mr Houwer, a Dutch citizen, purchased the resort in 1995 after coming to the VI as a guest for more than 15 years. He would spend millions of dollars renovating it and making it one of the most popular high-end resorts in the territory, particularly for honeymooners and couples looking for a romantic getaway.

‘A true friend’ of VI- Hon Wheatley

Ninth District Representative and Minister for Natural Resources, Labour and Immigration Hon Vincent O. Wheatley wrote on his Facebook page today, January 31, 2022, that he was very saddened to hear of the passing of Mr Houwer.

“Mr Houwer was a true friend of the BVI, especially Virgin Gorda. He loved the beauty of the BVI and took a keen interest in the development of its people and the preservation of its environment.”

Hon Wheatley added that he was very fortunate to have met Mr Houwer and spent time with him chatting about the future of North Sound.

“He was fully committed to its orderly development. He was a rather quiet but very thoughtful person. He was not only willing to talk, but also put his money where his mouth was.”

‘Serious loss to North Sound community’

Hon Wheatley described Mr Houwer’s passing as “a serious loss to the North Sound community” but said had every confidence that Mr Houwer’s children will carry on his great legacy.

“I have reached out to the family and expressed my condolences to them. May his soul Rest In Peace,” Hon Wheatley wrote.

        yes many locals are employed but mopping floors, cutting grass and making beds majority on minimum wages while the investors in your country raking in millions per year

    It is very hard when lose a loved one in death. Sympathy goes out to family and friends. Some are sad that he is gone, only because of the hand-out they get.
