Big Spending Antigua bid for World Cup Glory

ST JOHN’S, Antigua, WI – The Antigua & Barbuda Football Association (ABFA) will spend an estimated EC $1.5 million in 2015 as it jump-starts its 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying bid.

General Secretary, Gordon “Banks” Derrick, said the ABFA’s budget was presented to its body at a congress held on Monday night December 22, 2014 at the Multipurpose & Exhibition Cultural Center at Perry Bay.

The Benna Boys, Derrick said, are expected to kick-off their campaign sometime in June of next year when they compete in a preliminary round to be hosted by CONCACAF.

“There’s a bit of funding that we are going to get, and plus, we have to look for sponsorship and stuff like that, so we are putting things together because the committees are together to put things in place, so we are looking to rollout for the first week of January to start getting everybody on board and getting ourselves sorted out; plus, we still have a few outstanding bills to pay from the previous World Cup so we still have some funds to look out for,” Derrick said.

Antigua & Barbuda will play two preliminary matches in an effort to qualify for the group stage of the CONCACAF leg.

Derrick said a number of other matters were dealt with during Monday night’s meeting. “We presented the budget for 2015, 2016 and 2017, which was passed by the ABFA body, so we had to get some of those things in place also; so that was done and we had a very good meeting. We also passed the code of ethics, which we have now instituted, and the clubs have passed that,” Derrick said.

“We have instituted a (code of conduct) as to how you (clubs and ABFA) conduct your meetings and so forth and that came into full circle also. We also named a few committees; our ethics and fair play committee was brought in, we brought in the disciplinary committee, and the appeals committee was properly constituted,” Derrick added.

Antigua & Barbuda’s Benna Boys recently participated in the CFU Caribbean Cup in which they advanced to the final round leg of the competition in Jamaica.
