The donkey races at the Carrot Bay Cultural event on August 9, 2013 didn't quite live up to expectation as there were only about two uninterrupted races. Persons who lined the streets still enjoyed the usual comedy associated with those types of races. Photo: VINO

CARROT BAY, Tortola, VI- It was not so much about the married women defeating the single women at tug-war or who won the donkey races but more about the tons of excitement and humour offered during the novelty events and the entertainment offered by the hilarious announcer Craig Lake aka DJ Push Pop who continuously tickled the crowd to delirium with his jokes during the Carrot Bay Cultural Fiesta at the Benito Potter Festiville on August 9, 2013.
There was also a large turnout of persons for the programme and although the highly anticipated donkey races didn’t quite come off as expected, persons received much consolation from the excitement offered at the other events.
The highlight for the novelty events was the tug-o-war between married women and single ladies and married men and single men.
The women’s event saw the likes of Irene Penn-O’Neal and Mary Lou Creque proudly stepping up to represent married women while persons such as Simone E. Martin and Leslie Morgan come forward for the single ladies team. The married women then made light work of the single women in the first tussle but then found themselves being dragged over by their determined opponents. The single women seemed keen on winning the two best in three tug-o-war and had the married women in trouble before seemingly running out of fight.
The married men, however, failed to match the success of their women counterparts as they were overcome twice by the stronger and younger single men. But the married men were determined to not give the impression they were weak and couch potatoes at home but strong and hard working as they dug deep and gritted their teeth in their efforts to save face.
The married men’s team included retired Commissioner of Police Mr Reynell Frazer, Mr Elton Callwood and First District Representative Hon. Andrew A. Fahie, who would have probably been a much stronger force maybe a year ago.
Lime and Spoon
Earlier, there were medals to be won in the Lime and Spoon events and also some disappointment for some of the participants who came close to the finish line only to lose their lime and having to rush back to the starting line to try again.
The winners in the girls 4-6 age group were k'meeya Chung, Alestra Butler and Ja'nae Hannah respectively while for the boys, Rayshawn Lavacia and Jahari Lacey were first and second respectively.
The 7-10 girls' winners were Vanessa Pratt and Shakes Dore while the first three boys to make it over the line with their lime and spoon intact were Amari Lewis, Demari Lewis and M'korie Crabbe.
Zasabrah Rhymer, Morgan Creque and Shekinah Stoutt were the winners in the 11-15 girls category while Chaz Francis, Kymani Saloman and Thomas Rieu proved to be the most skilful with the lime and spoon.
There were two races for open females due to the number of participants. Nydia Harrigan, Aracelis Garcia and Roxanne Babinska showed they had mastered the skills of the lime and spoon in the first race while race 2 saw Lucy Donovan, Irena Davis and Marva Martin showing stead hands en route to medal winning finishes.
A steady hand is definitely needed for the lime and spoon event and it was no surprise that renowned artist Mr Reuben Vanterpool won easy in the men’s race. Jason Lyons and Leslie Allen followed for second and third respectively.
Donkey Races
There didn’t seem to have been much emphasis placed on the donkey races by the organisors even though persons lined the streets eager to get a piece of the action and the usual comedy associated with those types of races.
The donkeys and their owners were out for the races but it seemed as though there were no plans in place to secure the road for the races as traffic continued to flow even when some races were being run.
But the usual stubbornness from the donkeys were there as one of them refused to let the jockey mount her while a huge male donkey named Shaq was more interested in the line-up of female donkeys around rather than racing.
There were also the usual busts of screams from children along the streets when it seemed the donkeys were heading in their direction or were simply passing too close for their liking.
In one of the races managed to be run without the interference of traffic, Mary Jane with jockey Elton Parson edged out Land Crab with jockey Jeffrey Forbes. Mr Forbes and Land Crab had earlier defeated Mr Parsons and Shaq in the first race of the day.
A brave tourist also decided to get on one of the donkeys and was engaged in one of the races while many others prefered to stay their distance and snap their photos quite contentedly. One person also put their brave little child on one of the donkeys as photographers rushed around to capture the moment.
