BELLE VUE, Tortola, VI – Residents of the Belle Vue and the surrounding communities once again have a basketball facility, after being without one since the hurricanes of 2017, which destroyed over 90% of the territory’s recreational facilities.

Premier and Minister of Finance, Honorable Andrew A. Fahie (R1) in the presence of other government legislators on Friday, May 14, 2021, officially declared the facility re-opened and repaired with a budget of approximately $40,000.

Budget prevents more works - Hon Maduro-Caines

Expressing gratitude that the youths of the community had their long cries answered was Sixth-District Representative, Honourable Alvera Maduro-Caines (R6), who made brief remarks during the opening ceremony.

“I know it’s been a while since the young men and women in this area were out of any kind of sporting facility… we would have preferred to rebuild the gym, but financial constraints would not allow us to.”

Before the hurricanes of 2017, the facility was in an enclosed building that accommodated other activities, and according to government officials, a covering will be added over the court in the future.

Hon Maduro-Caines said regardless of budget constraints, she could not go another year without putting something in place for the youths, “It is my intention hopefully by next year, to put a covering over this court and I will make sure it’s in the budget for 2022,” she further added.

Take care of the facility - Hon Maduro-Caines urges youths

Hon Maduro-Caines also urged youths to take good care of the facility, as it will also be easily accessible to students of the Joyce Samuel Primary School for outdoor sports activities.

“They now have a place to play their sports once again. I thank the Minister of Education and our Premier for allocating some money to get this court to where it is now. I have to also say thanks to Keith Malone for his work here on this court. Zone 6 Belle Vue court looking good!” she said.

The evening also saw Premier Fahie and his Ministers taking on the youths of the community in a 3x3 challenge, which ended with youths coming out as victors.
