THE SETTLEMENT, Anegada, VI- Governor Daniel Pruce has said being Governor is a job he’s always wanted.

Appearing on the ‘Too Inquisitive Podcast’, hosted by Lawrence A. Kirton-Wheatley, aka ‘Bunchie’, that aired on YouTube on March 31, 2025, Governor Pruce was asked to divulge one thing about himself that the people of the Virgin Islands (VI) do not know.

Mr Pruce said he considers the job of Governor as a great privilege, as it was the fortunate consequence of a long period of selection and preparation.

Vacancy was advertised across UK civil service

Governor Pruce was sworn in as the 15th Governor of the VI in January 2024, succeeding former Governor Mr John J. Rankin.

As a diplomat for over 30 years, serving in various roles across multiple countries, he said the job was advertised across the United Kingdom (UK) public civil service.

“I, like many others, applied. This is a job that I've always wanted. I always thought would be a fantastic role,” he shared, adding, “There's a written application, you're sifted. There's then an interview. If the interview panel thinks that you might be suitable for the job, they recommend your appointment.”

In his case, he explained that his recommendation for appointment was sent to the UK’s Foreign Secretary, and upon his agreement forwarded the recommendation to the Prime Minister.

“The final say so goes to Buckingham Palace and to the king himself, and it’s only at that point, once you've gone to all of those stages, that your appointment is confirmed.”

The Governor added of the road to becoming Governor, “There's a long process of selection and scrutiny that you go through to get here, and rightly so.”

While this seems to be Governor Pruce’s dream job, he has come under tough criticism from the Virgin Islanders for some of the decisions he has taken.
