ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- 43 individuals were registered as British citizens during a ceremony held at Government House on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.

During the ceremony, the newly registered British citizens received congratulatory remarks from the Governor of the Virgin Islands, His Excellency Mr Daniel Pruce, and Registrar General, Mrs Tashi O’Flaherty-Maduro.

Moral & legal responsibilities

In his remarks, Governor Pruce congratulated the new British citizens, stating, “I congratulate you on having persevered with the process, and for having demonstrated your allegiance to the United Kingdom as well as to The Virgin Islands. The British Citizen’s passport, to which you will now be entitled, enables you to enjoy rights of residence and employment in the United Kingdom. This opens up new opportunities for study and professional development which I hope you will grasp.”

The Governor also reminded the new citizens that their citizenship carries new moral and legal responsibilities; he also encouraged them to remain supportive of persons who are new to the Territory. The Governor said, “I ask you in particular to be always supportive of others who are newcomers to this Territory, just as you are now newcomers as British citizens. As the good book reminds us, ‘You shall love the stranger, for you were once strangers in the land’”

Beginning of another chapter

Registrar General, Mrs Tashi O’Flaherty-Maduro, said, “Citizenship is often associated with a passport, a certificate, or a legal status. Yet its true meaning extends well beyond the documents that establish it.”

She continued, “To our new citizens, I wish to emphasise that today does not require you to leave behind the experiences, traditions, or personal histories that have shaped who you are. Rather, it marks the beginning of another chapter, one in which those experiences can continue to enrich the communities to which you belong.

"Each of you has arrived at this moment by a different path. Some journeys may have been straightforward, while others may have required considerable patience, determination, and perseverance. Whatever your individual circumstances, today provides an opportunity to acknowledge the importance of this achievement.”
