Basketball Summer League opens!
After the first game, Another Level took on Hawks and the first night concluded with Easts against Young Legs.
The full list of registered teams is as follows:
Junior Division: The Hawks, Another Level, Skulls, ESHS Rams, Young Starz, Young Gunners, Junior Mystics, And One and Junior Pure Playaz.
Senior Division: Legs, Mega Mix, Easts, All Ah We, Bigga Moves, HLSCC, Pure Playaz, Rebels and Latinos.
In addition, there is also about 8-10 teams in the newly implemented 13-16 division. These games will be played on Sundays from 2 p.m., which according to BVIBF President Byron Hodge, “is in an attempt to encourage parental support in something positive”.
The BVIBF will be operating the 2012 League under the Rules and Regulations from the Governing body FIBA. Additionally, though, the BVIBF has added some extra rules to ensure discipline and good sportsmanship throughout the tournaments.As Hodge pointed out though, “if there is any doubt or dispute between the two afore mentioned entities the rules of the BVIBF shall take precedence”.
The extra rules are Eligibility of Players: A. The age groups are as follows: 1.) Players must be between the ages of 13-16 years old. 2.) Players may not turn 17 years old before December 31st, 2012.3.) Players must attend primary, secondary, or alternative school to participate in this league. Players that have quit school are not eligible.
B. Equipment: 1.) Players must wear suitable shoes.2.) Teams must have matching numbered shirts
C. Technical Fouls: 1.) Any player receiving technical Fouls for unsportsmanlike conduct will be ejected from the game. 2.) Once a player is ejected he/she must leave the gym and if needed the Multi Purpose Complex property.3.) A player that is ejected from two games will be suspended from playing the remainder of the season and/or the tournament.
D. Players: 1.) All players must be listed on a roster. Rosters may not exceed 15 players. It is the responsibility of the coach to complete the roster and turn it into the BVIBF before the first game. 2.) All Basketball rosters must be turned in before a team will be allowed to play. 3.) If a player’s age is in question, a birth certificate must be presented to the BVIBF. 4.) Rosters must be turned in to the BVIBF before the first game. No additions to the rosters are to be made after 28th May, 2012.5.) Players may not change teams after league play begins.
E. Forfeits: Games will be forfeited if: 1.) A team is not ready to play at game time. 2.) An illegal player is listed on the roster, or player plays without being listed on the roster. 3.) A team or coach receives (3) technical fouls in one game for unsportsmanlike conduct.
4.) Any team that forfeits (2) games, is dropped from the league.
F: Coaches: 1.) An adult coach must be present at all times. He/She must remain at the Multi Purpose Complex until their last team member is picked up. 2.) Unsportsmanlike conduct by coaches will not be tolerated. Any unsportsmanlike conduct will result in the coach being asked to immediately leave the facility, and possibly not return. 3.) Disputed calls will be discussed with the coaches only. It is recommended that you call a time out. Failure to discuss the matter in a calm manner will result in a technical foul. 4.) All coaches must attend a coaches meeting. 5.) It is the coach’s job to control their fans.6.) Each coach will be allowed (2) time-outs per half. Each time out is two minutes long.
G. Scoring:1.) Dunking is not allowed. If a player does dunk, the basket will not count, the ball will be turned over to the opposing team, and a technical foul will be given to the violating team.
H. Full Court Press & Pressure Defense:1.) May press or play pressure defense at any time during a game. With the exception being when a team is (20) points ahead, at which point the team must play 1⁄2 court defense.
I. Fans:1.) Fans are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that will provide a positive experience for all youth present. Fans that can’t will have to leave the facility immediately.
J. Technical Fouls & Fouls: 1.) Unsportsmanlike Conduct: a.) Will resort in a player being removed from the game. A judgment call by officials will not be debated or overturned. b.) A technical foul will be awarded when a player exhibits a lack of self-control. The following are examples: Cursing, slamming the ball, arguing with the officials, and flagrant fouling. (These are just some examples and will not be considered an all exclusive list.) 2.) Technical Infraction: a.) A violation of the rules that results in a technical foul that does not demonstrate a lack of self control.3.) The official will decide on the player’s status in the game after a technical foul or violation has been called.
K. Playoff: Ties will be determined in the order that follows: 1.) 1st place team receives 1st round bye 2.) Head to Head Match-ups. 3.) Bye record against common opponents.4.) Coin Toss.
The number of teams in the league will determine how many teams will participate in post season play. Byes during the post season will be given to the highest ranked team.
L. Rules Committee: 1.) Any appeal to these rules must be made in writing to the rules committee.2.) Any protest or question of protest must be made known on the day of, or evening of the game in question.
