ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Territory is one step closer to being relieved of the issue of derelict vehicles.

During the Fifth Sitting of the Second Session of the Fifth House of Assembly (HoA) on June 3, 2025, Minister for Health and Social Development Honourable Vincent O. Wheatley (R9) informed his colleagues that the collected vehicles are scheduled to be transported out of the territory later this month.

“The barge to facilitate the exportation of these vehicles is expected to arrive in June,” the minister said, adding that the process is expected to be completed by June 19, 2025.

Minister Wheatley emphasised that this initiative represents a significant step forward in restoring both the environmental health and the visual beauty of the affected area.

More vehicles than planned were removed

The government entered into a contract with ENS Excavation and Trucking Services in March 2025 for the clearance of the temporary derelict vehicle site located at Havers, Tortola.

The contract originally covered the removal of 500 derelict vehicles, however, a total of 642 vehicles were collected and prepared for export.

The minister explained that the unexpected surplus of 142 derelict vehicles consisted primarily of abandoned cars left in public areas, along with vehicles confiscated by the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF).

Derelict vehicles collection suspended pending new site

Hon Wheatley also informed that the search for a new long-term storage site for derelict vehicles is being conducted through the Department of Waste Management (DWM).

“As part of our efforts, the Ministry has engaged the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change for assistance in identifying a suitable parcel of Crown land for the sole purpose of storing and processing derelict vehicles and other scrap metal.”

While the search continues, Hon Wheatley stated, the collection of derelict vehicles will have to be suspended.

“However, in the interim, the Department will continue to issue removal notices to owners of derelict vehicles deemed to be an immediate public nuisance and, where necessary, will impose fines until such vehicles are removed to an appropriate location.”

these unsightly derelict vehicles onto the barge directly from the illegal land fill on the Havers coast will save Drake's Hwy. from more destruction by heavy trucks.

Why move the site? No matter where you relocate it, people will be upset. A car graveyard is not wanted anywhere, and disgruntled people will forever complain. If not Havers, then where will the new location be? Get ready for more backlash, and will you move the new site again?

You raise some good points; however, where they are currently stored in Havers is essentially on the front cover of the VI, visible to all visitors and residents by land or sea. The ministers know this, which is why they are finding a more suitable location

@@ Greg. A derelict car graveyard will be seen from any angle on the island. Whether NSEW, it will be seen by someone in that area where they live, and no one will like it. I live in Havers, and not all of us are complaining. So I ask, what is the real reason for moving the site again? Does it have anything to do with favoritism from complainants in this area? Well, what about the new complainants that will come later? Stop playing POLI-TRICKS! The Government is supposed to look out for the entire BVI, not just a few disgruntled people who will be complaining no matter where you put it. Given this scenario, the car graveyard will always be on the move looking for a new home.

Use the admin building land. Nothing happening there anyway and it’s close to the sea where loading can take place.

There are thousands more. Look around. The whole VI is a junk yard.
There are also the sunken everywhere.
But let's not put them back where the Mangroves should be.
And prosecute whoover destroyed the mangroves and seabed there with landfill.
And check the destruction down by the Beef island bridge. There will be no nature left soon. Bush with cars, seabed with landfill, shorelines with no trees, beaches with chairs.

Presently in the B.V.I are hundereds of derelict vehicles, backhoes, and a few bulldozers, too, that need to badge out of this territory. If only one badge is coming a number of trips will be needed, factually true. There are some derelict vehicles at the "junk Yard" close to Hodges Creek that urgently need to be badge out of the B.V.I along with those planned.
We need much more the paint on a few wall, and flowers trees along the main traffic roads to inspire new tourists to visit the B.V.I.
Tourists that come to visit our shores don't eye-soaring ghuts scene, especially the Long Swamp ghut that separated the 7th, 8th district, and others that flood through our main traffic roads regularly clean, and covers.
We also need many more garbage bins placement. Too often those in place are quickly filled, and garbage are thrown alongside the bins. Dogs, cats, ground fouls, and unfortunately, and sadly, a few humans in the 7th, and 8th district check for food.
