Barbados election 2013 - PM Freundel J. Stuart defeats Owen S. Arthur!

Closest election even in the history of Barbados with a 16-14 win for ruling DLP
Barbados Prime Minister Freundel J. Stuart's ruling Democratic Labour Party retained the Government following the 2013 general elections held on 21, February 2013. His party won 16 of the 30 seats in Parliament keeping the Barbados Labour Party of Owen S. Arthur in the opposition benches for another 5 years. Photo:caribjournal
While gaining four new seats in the election of 2013 it was not enough to give Barbados Labour Party headed by Opposition Leader and former Prime Minister Owen S. Arthur a majority. His party won only 14 of the 30 seats in the Barbados House of Assembly. It means that he has to remain in the Opposition as the ruling Democratic Labour Party of Prime Minister Freundel J. Stuart will be in power for another 5 years. Photo:thecommonwea

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, WI - Proving there was little swing among the Barbadian electorate, the incumbent Democratic Labour Party (DLP) of Prime Minister Freundel J. Stuart QC, retained the Government of Barbados this morning February 22, 2013 with a 16-14 seat majority, following a nail-biting battle that was decided nine hours after the polls had closed.

There are 30 seats in the Barbados House of Assembly. The Opposition Barbados Labour Party (BLP) headed by Opposition Leader Hon. Owen S. Arther gained 4 seats but it was not enough to give him the government.

In arguably the closest local general election result ever, the DLP established its right to run the country for the next 5 years after winning its 16th seat in the most populous constituency, St Philip South, at 2:27 a.m.

There, Adriel Brathwaite captured 3 514 votes, beating by exactly 400 votes the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) candidate Anthony Wood, who recently returned to the fray after his 2008 defeat.

The last seat to be decided after a recount was won by BLP candidate Santia Bradshaw over the DLP’s Patrick Tannis, both new candidates, in the St Michael South-East riding.

Unique political history

Since its independence in 1966 no government in Barbados has served one term ever, and in keeping with this history the people of Barbados give Prime Minister Stuart’s DLP another 5 year term.

Unlike the Virgin Islands who have changed their governments every time since 2003 only given each politcal party a one 4 year term.

Prime Minister Stuart took over the leadership of Barbados following the death on 23, October 2010 of late Prime Minister David J. H. Thompson who died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 48.

It is very unfortunate that the DLP is returned to inflict more pain and suffering on Barbados,,, particularly the old and disabled. Arthur had a better plan.
