BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI - Commentator and Government consultant, Mr Claude O. Skelto-Cline has called for a complete banning of scooters in the Virgin Islands (VI), given that over the past months there have been a number of scooter-related accidents involving local youths.

Just yesterday, Tuesday, March 24, 2020, 27-year-old VIslander K'Shawn S. Thomas of Greenland, Tortola, was the Territory's latest road fatality.

Thomas killed when he became involved in an accident with a fuel truck on Gene Hill, Tortola. According to reports, the young man was run over by the vehicle.

Too much Recklessness - Skelton-Cline

'There are too many deaths taking place with these scooters...  either we ban them or we will keep burying you," Mr Skelton-Cline told his listening audience on the Tuesday, March 24, 2020 edition of his radio show 'Honestly Speaking' on ZBVI 780 AM.

"There is a level of recklessness that is happening in this country, week in, week out with these scooters... somebody again just died."

According to the man of the cloth, "I know they are all kinds of arguments out there [that] banning is not the answer, it may not be the answer but I'm going to ask you something, you want to keep burying your young people?"

He said if not a complete ban, authorities should consider an age limit where below 25 years of age would not be allowed to traverse on scooters or other similar cycles, since they tend to put people's lives at risk.

Families also impacted

The Honestly Speaking host also noted that as part of the accidents, law-abiding citizens are then impacted after crashing into the riders who are often young men, 'it's not right that somebody has to go home tonight and two families are mourning."

Skelton-Cline charged, "Either we ban these things or we will keep burying our young people because what should be a meaningful, helpful mode of transportation is becoming something else."

He said if no age limit or ban is put on scooters and similar vehicles in the territory, the burials will continue.

Good idea - mandatory testing with a genuine level of training for “defensive riding” skills. Curious how this aligns with the great plan to introduce 600cc motorcycles into BVI...

thing is, a bigger bike would have been safer and more controllable. Obviously he was speeding, probably near top speed on the scooter, where there is less control and breaking power. A bigger bike he would have been in 1st or 2nd gear doing the same speed but a better machine with better breaking, better handling and better controls.

The harsh reality is that not everyone can afford to buy an AUDI like Skelton-Cline, not everyone lives on or close to the public road system that they can catch a bus, not everyone can afford to catch a taxi and not everyone ride the same way as these young a** holes that think they are either invincible or Evel Knievel. There are alot of responsible riders that should not be forced to pay the penalty for others. If you want to band them, penalize the same people driving around in vehicles that are not license and insured, they are a hazard and putting law abiding citizens at risk the same way these young scooter riders are. Band the right hand drive vehicles the same way, they are a hazard, not because you have a clear view of oncoming traffice means you must hug the center line or in some cases be over it. What about these vehicles that are on the round that are not mechanical sound, makes you wonder how they even got licensed in the first place. If you want to target one area, TARGET ALL

This guy again. SMH. You want to ban a whole mode of transportation because a few careless riders. You want to ban right hand drive cars because you claim they are pollutants, but Volkswagen/Audi was fined for giving false emissions test on their vehicles. And you drive an Audi pastor. So let’s ban Audi’s while we at it. Banning is not the solution. Drivers and riders need to respect other road users/pedestrians, respect the machines that they operate and respect traffic laws. Helmets, seatbelts and operating in a safe manner

I agree that’s it’s a mode of transportation and that the responsible drivers shouldn’t be punished because of these reckless drivers (not saying the poor young man that lost his life yesterday was riding recklessly - just speaking in general).. however it’s quite clear that some of these youngsters are not adhering to the law and the police are not enforcing the law enough so as a country we may just have to choose the lesser of the 2 evils.. so I say if this is the only way to protect them then we do so but we have to convince the powers that be.. but will they listen!

I was not for the banning of bikes but something drastic should be done. The attitude of some scooter riders is having a devastating effect on other road users. The incident on yesterday with that fuel delivery vehicle will have a traumatic experience on the operator of the vehicle for years to come

I honestly think that the authorities should conduct training for the riders of these scooters. Before a rider is allowed to own and or ride a scooter, he should undergo an evaluation and examination to check the competence level.

Undoubtedly, the daring and reckless riding of scooters is causing the premature death of the V.I. sons and daughters at a young age. The premature deaths and injuries is not changing the reckless behaviour of our young men and women who feels they are invincible and it is cool to ride reckless, posing a danger to themselves, to other motorists and pedestrians. Nonetheless, banning bike may not be the complete solutions, for bikes are alone are not the problem. Banning bikes is not the panacea. The problem is the young reckless riders. Thus, community action(s) is needed to change the behaviour of our young sons and daughters. This behavioural change must change with parents and guardians, churches, social clubs, NGOs, friends, RVIPF and government. Specifically, the RVIPF must take a no nonsense approach to reckless scooter riding. Start aggressively ticketing, fining, confiscating bikes.......etc. This is not an individual problem; it is a community problem, a territorial problem and it will take the whole community to fix. Let’s stop the carnage.

My condolence to the young man's family and I can't pass judgment because I wasn't there.
The truth is, though, too many of our young men are doing nonsense with these scooters - they ride without helmet, they don't obey the stop signs, they speed and they interfere with the mufflers so that the bikes become a nuisance to society. Most of the culprits are our indisciplined students.
I have seen them in action on Lower Estate Road and I see them also at Pasea. The more disturbance they caused, the more approval they get from their peers.
The madness will only stop when drastic actions are taken because the deaths don't seem to phase them.
Banning the scooters would be unfortunate because I see many Asians,Caucasians as well as a few our own people riding in a very responsible way. I think the police should go on a drive to rid the streets of all indisciplined/illegal scooter riders. After that they could tackle other indisciplined/illegal motorists like some of the truck drivers who drive at very dangerous speeds on our roadways.

I think the police are fed up (rightfully so). When they chase those scooter riders, we complain that they are putting lives in danger and when they don't, we complain that they should. I pray for the scooter riders when they pass me on corners and in very narrow spaces between vehicles because only God can shield them. While laws should be enforced, citizens have a responsibility to abide by them.

I wonder if scooters are permitted in the US Virgin Islands, because I do not see them in St Thomas behaving recklessly as I do in the BVI. To each his own. If the youngsters want to ride bikes and behave lawlessly, so be it. Let them continue. They will soon have even larger machines to do more recklessness. Someone with locks rides a big bike at times, and he has that thing humming.

I say the riders just need to obey the traffic laws. Stop when necessary, use the lanes marked for motorists, wear your helmets and ride the bikes on both wheels at all times and you will be safe.

@TheBugzyMalone also came a cropper last night. It does seem to be a problem of disrespect and attitude rather than the vehicles themselves. Other places can get by with no dramas at all and many two wheelers and trikes. Also, the amount of people driving in the middle on the wrong side in cars in BVI... partly because no consideration for anyone but also as most cars have the driving seat on the wrong side for our roads. Only now more RHD cars coming in which should help a bit.

This can't be tru this is pure B.S cuz not all of us duzn't ride reckless on the road to we winfully wan kill ourselves in a accident or injured ourselves. Police needs to keep an eye out for the ones the who is not wearing a helmet on the main road to even chk see'f them have papers n the proper parts tht came with the scooter them ESPECIALLY when it's always the youths them. Call me crazy and stupid buh at the end of the day y'all crushing y'all parents hearts even by not having a biker license on yu to say yu is a proper bike rider n wearing a helmet on y'all head which need to be a full face type of helmet and shud be stock in other words original in any colour.
