ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The Panthers went two up against the Ballstars in the National League on Saturday February 18, 2012 after goals from Stenneth Williams and Shannon Lawrence, but Jamie McKoy pulled one back before Carlos Septus rescued a point.

The Ballstars should then have wrapped up the game in the dying minutes when Trevor Ellis found himself one on one with the Keeper only to scuff his shot horribly wide.

The opening exchanges between two teams languishing in the lower reaches of the standings were full of bright endeavour with chances galore at either end. However, the Ballstars squandered the best opportunity from the penalty spot.

Nigel Chalemaque’s maisy run was brought to a sudden stop by the diving Erron Ewers inside his own box. Jamie McKoy then dragged his shot wide of the left hand post to spare Ewers any further embarrassment.

“Very encouraging, the guys played their hearts out,” commented coach Vincent Sammuel. “They showed they are committed and willing to fight, we were two down in the game and come back to not only level it but create chances to win it was a very commendable effort.”

Williams opened the scoring for the Panthers in the 41st minute, stabbing the ball home after it had come back off the post and Lawrence pounced on a mistake by Maxcel Dabreo in the Ballstars’ goal to knock in the second after 57 minutes, which according to their Coach, Mark Hall, should have been good enough for all three points.

“Two points we gave away right there,” he said, “two up in the second half and we shouldn’t have let them in the game, we should have closed the game out.”

He spared no blame clearly holding his goalkeeper and defense to blame. “These things happen, but our keeper made a mistake on the first goal and the defense lost their composure. I don’t really know why, but it cost us two points,” he lamented.

At two all the game was, to be fair, evenly poised and looked to be building to a highly charged last fifteen minutes.

First Dabreo had to claw away a corner taken from the left by Rudolph Davis. Then he dived smartly to thwart another Williams’ effort. At the other end Ewers dealt with the aerial threat of Troy Cesar and Fladimir Septus, before saving another effort from McKoy.

The Ballstars and especially the bench, thought they had the winner with Ellis clean through, but it wasn’t to be and a share of the points reflected the see saw battle.
