NASSAU, Bahamas - The Bahamian Health Ministry has denied rumours spreading on social media that claim coronavirus (COVID-19) cases are rising on New Providence.

In a statement on Monday, the ministry said confirmed COVID-19 cases are trending downward.

“In June 2023, the most recent complete month for comparison, there were only 56 confirmed cases,” the ministry said.

“The data clearly shows that there is an overall and definitive decline in the number of COVID-19 cases in The Bahamas for 2023. A closer examination of the number of positive cases over the past 28 days indicates that The Bahamas has averaged less than three cases per day over this period with no increases”.

The ministry noted that while the Director-General of the World Health Organisation, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, declared COVID-19 is no longer a public health emergency, it is still circulating in the community and now behaves like viral illness such as influenza.
