ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- A public awareness campaign highlighting the increased traffic fines and penalties now in effect under the Road Traffic (Amendment) Act, 2025, will soon commence.

In a Facebook post, the Roads Policing Unit of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) announced that during this campaign, officers will focus on the updated penalty amounts for common traffic offences and remind motorists of the importance of complying with the law.

The amended Act introduces several important updates that the public should be aware of, including new offences and significantly increased penalties for reckless driving behaviours.

Increased traffic penalities

As previously reported by Virgin Islands News Online, some of the new summary offences include:

- Overtaking on a corner or intersection (Section 31A): fine not exceeding $1,500

- Failing to remain stationary to allow a police officer to perform his or her duties (Section 39A): fine not exceeding $750 or imprisonment for up to 6 months

- Riding a motorcycle without a helmet: fine increased from $100 to $750

- Driving an uninsured vehicle: fine increased from $50 to $300

- Failing to stop at a red light: penalty of $500

- Using a vehicle that produces excessive noise (over 75 decibels): penalty of $1,000

- Owning or driving a motor vehicle with window film, tint, or any obscuring device that exceeds the prescribed limit without a permit: fixed penalty of $150 per glass

This amended legislation introduces several key changes intended to enhance road safety, modernise enforcement, and promote responsible motoring.

If Police officers bonus or pay was connected to the fines they levy that might help. But cctv needed to monitor any abuse

Our biggest traffic problems are not a money problem, but rather a law enforcement one of allowing motorcyclist to ride noisefully, randomly, arrogantly, unlawfully, unsafely without regards for public safety.
Both you and I know the above stated is the truth. Money collections can't fix that these problems, but they need to be fixed urgently beginning now, but who has the political courage to step up, and put their action "speaks louder than words" in the BVI political arena?

What about ilegal dumping in the green bins, and for blocking the public green bins on the road too, why y'all talk about that in the H.O.A? Because are literally being a set of litter bugs and needs to be punished among a maximum fine up $5,000 or 1 year in prison for illegal dumping and always be alert when us sanitary workers are out picking the government garbage work. This country has really gone down to bottom of the ocean and the politics are not solving the problem. People is not from this country should be monitored very closely and needs to be apprehend by breaking the law in this country.

Motorcyclists will only curb their behaviour if the scooters are confiscated. How are any fines going to be enforced against these lawless youths?

If the police officers are on commission I would camp out side the ferry dock and fine all the double and tripple parking. Its a major congestion area when the ferrys are on the dock. Poorly designed area with 5 drop off places.

Some of those fines are excessive when the real issue is enforcement.

Tell them businesses to have adequate parking for customers, where you want persons to park in town when you have others just parked for days, monitor the parking lots and no vehicle same should be parked for 24 hours straight. Also no vending or car wash or broken down vehicles should occupied parking spaces

I agreed and support enforcing laws. However, I've noticed officers.....they know who they are. Driving without seat belts while on/off duty. A few said they're exempt from wearing them......also their vehicles is just as dark as who others whom they're ticketing

All these police ticketing people and running up and down everyday. When they know who to pick on and who not to pick on. Them business people with them Big Jeep Gladiator driving up and down around town with the tint dark like midnight and up to now they ain't stop them. Let then try and see. They love to harass poop people but the rich always get a pass. It should be fair not bias.
