Chairperson of the Virgin Islands Festival and Fairs Committee (VIF& FC), Mrs Nathalie N. Penn-Lake said, “These words are not just a theme, they are a powerful reflection of who we are and what this festival represents”.
Avanell Morton, a name deeply rooted in VG- Premier Wheatley
The annual Easter Festival, now in its 59th year and this year, Mr Avanell Morton, aka ‘Clarkie’, a prominent sports administrator and cultural figure, was this year’s honouree.
Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R9) described the annual event as one of the most enduring and cherished cultural celebrations in the Virgin Islands (VI).
“Year after year, this festival brings together the very best of Virgin Gorda, its people, its culture, its creativity, and its unmistakable community spirit.”
Mr Morton’s name, he said, is deeply rooted in the life and identity of this community, and his selection as the 2026 Easter Festival Honouree is a fitting reminder that the festival is not just about events and entertainment, but people.
“Those who have contributed to building and sustaining the culture and spirit of Virgin Gorda over generations.”
Premier Wheatley said Mr Morton has continuously stepped forward to assist families, schools, churches, and community initiatives, quietly, generously and without expectation of reward.
“His example reminds us that community is not defined by where you are born, but by how you serve.”
A weekend of true culture & togetherness- Hon Vincent O. Wheatley
The Virgin Gorda Easter Festival, Premier Wheatley continued, has long been a cornerstone of the VI’s cultural calendar.
“It is a celebration that reflects the vibrancy of our people, and the strength of our traditions.”
Meanwhile, District Nine Representative and Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Vincent O. Wheatley, thanked those who put together the 59th Virgin Gorda Easter Festival.
“What started off as a family and friends get-together some 59 years ago has grown to what we see today, a weekend of true culture, true togetherness, true unity. Just family, friends and visitors getting together to celebrate unity, to celebrate love, to celebrate the season.”
Junior Minister for Tourism and Culture, Hon Luce D. Hodge-Smith (R4), extended her gratitude to the leadership and members of the Virgin Gorda Easter Festival Committee and the Virgin Islands Festival and Fairs Committee.
“As a former member of the Virgin Islands Festival and Fairs Committee, I know firsthand the gruelling hours and immense dedication required to stage these events.”
She also encouraged everyone to take a moment to remember the true meaning of this Easter Season.
