ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – As the Virgin Islands (VI) celebrates the emancipation season on the August Tuesday holiday, residents today, August 8, 2023, woke up to no electricity.

Sources told our news center that almost the entire VI is being affected, including the main island of Tortola, Virgin Gorda, and Jost van Dyke left without power, with the exception of Anegada which is on its own electricity grid.

The BVIEC in an update shared on Facebook this morning said, “The BVI Electricity Corporation would like to notify its customers that due to a loss of generating capacity, which occurred at approximately 6 AM this morning August 8th, 2023, a number of areas are currently without power.”

Officials later told the media in an update that after further investigations, they found that a failure on one of the bus sections caused the BVIEC to lose a significant amount of generating capacity and at 07:20 the residual effects of this issue caused a total system failure.

Officials at the BVIEC further promised to provide more updates as additional information becomes available.

Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) will bring more information as it becomes available.

So how come with all the activity in and around festival that require a high demand in supply it didn't shut down, or august monday. Now supply much lower in demand they come with this nonsense. Since 2007 this have been their pattern when all the allegation and suspicion were raise of shutting off the power to force us and the Govt to support them to buy new generators, the allegation been around since 2007-08 that they are big cut backs from buying new generators, Inflated invoices, personal percentage discount..Did someone get fired or prosecuted? Not sure..This was the same before before they bought new generators only to find out, the old ones we had were working better than the new ones..That was one of the main reasons VIP lost the election in 2011 too many power outages and scandals.

It doesn’t matter if his ministries are in shambles. His lifetime pension is almost will be secured within the next few months while we continue to struggle with the effects of having ineffective leaders. What a shame.
