ROAD TOWN, Tortola, V I- In a very inspirational pep talk to the territory’s teachers and principals, Pastor Dr. Vincent A. David, who was invited to their ‘Professional day for Educators’ as the Guest Speaker, encouraged them to never have the mentality that dreaming is only for the students, that dreaming is for them as well; he told them their attitude towards work, others and life is everything.

At the meeting that was held at the Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium, yesterday August 27, 2012, Pastor David told them to always pursue their dream no matter what and to take time to dream, for it will lead to success.

“Teachers too often think that dreaming is only for the students, but it is for the teachers as well, the passion and purpose will keep your dream from dying.”

Guest Speaker David reminded the teachers that the learning environment is the most dynamic medium of transmitting information, inculcating lessons and pursuing goals. “Every true educator wants to be successful.”

He then turned to the Minister for Education, Hon. Myron Walwyn and other Ministry officials who were in attendance and said “If you don’t feed the teachers, they will eat the teachers.”

He told them that it is important that they take care of the teachers. He went on to say that, for them to create a culture of excellence within the schools, they must have commitment, collaboration, communication and celebration.

“Too often teachers show up for a paycheck and have no interest in the development of the students; you cheat yourself and you cheat your students, you fool yourself and nobody else, and that’s a painful experience.”

He informed the teachers that creating a culture of excellence doesn’t have to be difficult but it will again take commitment, collaboration, communication and celebration to get it started.

In a brief reminder that schools re-commence from summer break next week, he said that they must get ready, physically and mentally, for what is ahead.

Pastor David encouraged the principals to let their teachers speak and to listen to them “you only will know what’s on their mind if you allow them to speak and when you know what’s on their minds you can better meet what they desire so they can do what is to be done.”

He continued by saying “Don’t spite the teachers by putting them in a class [where] they don’t have the necessary skills to move the class forward, teachers should be placed where they are best qualified so the students can get the best of every teacher in the school.”

He stated that no teacher should say that they are only in charge of the classes they are assigned too, but to look out for the whole school  “every child that is out of line will affect your good class, when your student[s] succeed, you succeed, the institution succeed[s], and the ministry succeed[s].

In light of all that was said, he said in order to be the best at what they do, and to live life at a 100 percent, they have to [have] a positive attitude towards anything they do, no matter how big or small.

“It cannot be done with love, hard work, knowledge, luck, money [or] leadership, to go further in life and to get all that is listed above you must have the right attitude.”

He told both teachers and principals that if “you want to change your culture, change your attitude; you want to change your students, change your attitude; you want to change the educational system, change your attitude and you having changed your attitude... will change your life.”

Some of them will eat the students whether you feed them or not. It is the attitude they bring to the classroom and some are adult bullies.

Attitude, committment, a comfortable working environment and adequate compensation are all a part of the equation.
