VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI- Minister for Health and Social Development Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9) has announced that an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) for Anegada is among immediate plans for the island.

Hon Wheatley disclosed this during the launch of a Customer Service Care Centre in Virgin Gorda on Thursday, July 24, 2025.

He said that among developments on the Sister Islands is an ATM. The House of Assembly also met on Thursday, and among matters were the Schedules of Additional Provisions (SAP) Number 2 of 2025.

“I was going through the SAP,” he said, continuing, “One of the things I saw is there is funding for the ATM in Anegada, that is progress.”

First ATM for Anegada

Anegada, he said, has long been without an ATM. The Sister Island has never had an ATM. Once approved, this will be the first ATM on the island.

“I started working, it must have been ten years ago, and I’m happy to see it’s finally coming. It’s basically hard for Anegadians who don’t have a regular ferry service to have to go to Tortola,” Hon Wheatley said.

The SAP is still in the committee stage of the House.

It is unclear where the ATM will be placed; however, back in 2022, the BVI Ports Authority (BVIPA) had said it was looking at the possibility of having an ATM installed at the ferry dock on Anegada and that the banks in the Virgin Islands would be approached to see who would be willing to take on the initiative.

Banking facilities ‘desperately’ needed on Anegada

A resident of Anegada had expressed that there was a desperate need for banking facilities on the island.

“It's $50 on a ferry to go to an ATM to get a hundred bucks or get whatever you want. We need a bank here desperately,” expressed a senior resident of Anegada back in April 2022.

The absence of banking facilities is not only felt by residents; according to the Chairman of the Anegada Land Advisory Committee, Darrell A. Ruan Jr., it’s a sore issue for tourists.

“Many of the business owners can attest to many of the tourist frustrations that there is no ATMs on the island and having to find cash. It’s a ridiculous big issue here on this island,” Mr Ruan Jr had said.

Long time coming. Wow. The banks should be feeling terrible after reading this in 2025. They have customers from Anegada, including Hotels and Restaurants so this would have been the professional thing to do years ago. They use our money and do not give back in interest, so at least their service should not be sub-par. Sadly it is if Anegada is only now getting an ATM. Congratulations, Anegada. You are now a part of the real banking world, at least on the first level. Hopefully it is maintained properly. Happy for you all.

It is amazing what we celebrate around these beautiful Virgin Islands. Imagine travelling to more mature jurisdictions around the world and going on and on about finally getting an ATM machine on one of the sister islands in this YEAR 2025. Persons would look at you from head to toe, and struggle to decide if they should feel sorry for you for being crazy, or if they should feel sorry for you for being impressed by stuff the rest of the world already had for the last 4 or 5 decades. Don't come for me. Just being real.

at this point Anegada should be a cashless society and leveraging digital currency / mobile payments like Somaliland

But in the times when you can pay for stuff with your debit card, why is an atm that will be out of cash a half an hour after it is replenished necessary? This is a waste of time. All it needs is a good internet service to facilitate debit card machines.
