ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Almost before the last of the Christmas turkey has been digested and the final New Year’s firework diminished, a draft sporting Calendar of Events has been produced, ahead of the kick off for the Athletics season.

The season actually gets under starters orders with a junior track meet at Capoons Bay on January 11, 2014 for 9-11 year old athletes and then on January 18, attention moves to Virgin Gorda for the start of the DIVE BVI 5k series.

Organisers are laying on transport from Tortola for participants as they are hoping for the same sort of record turn out as 2013, when over 60 runners took part in the first race

The Blenheim 5k series kicks off in Tortola on March 8.

The first full BVIAA Development Meet is scheduled for the A.O. Shirley Ground on January 24th and then they break new ground by holding a meet on Virgin Gorda, February 1st, 2014.

Volleyball, Softball and Cricket are yet to finalise their seasons, with February and March being the likely dates.

Football is still waiting on ground availability, but should begin the National League by the end of January.

Who's the smart person who came up with this idea. The govt spent millions to build us a proper track but we choose to have meets at capoon's bay & virgin gorda where there's dirt fields to run the risk of injury to the athletes.

Set of brilliant people on the planning committee. Guess they actually think that they are doing something good.

Put the well being of the athletes first when you come up with your bright ideas.

@Really - Grass / dirt tracks are actually easier on the body than the rubberised tracks (which provide a more solid footing for greater speed). Thus more likely to get injuries on a rubberised track than on a grass / dirt track.
