ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- A decision has been made to demolish the Althea Scatliffe Primary School (ASPS) building on Station Road and rebuild it.

This is according to Deputy Premier and Minister for Communications and Works Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5).

The school building was ordered closed by the Ministry of Education on June 17, 2022, due to safety concerns. Since then, the more than 350 affected children have been placed at various schools across Tortola.

‘The plan is to tear it down’- Hon Rymer

Speaking at a press conference today, October 28, 2022, Hon Rymer, when questioned about the plans for the building, said he has been in dialogue with the Minister for Education since the school is in his constituency.

“The plan is to tear it down. The engineers have decided that the building is not safe, so we are going through the process.”

According to Hon Rymer, Public Works Department has been tasked with providing a Bill of Quantities to see what it will cost for the building to be demolished.

He also said the plan is to demolish the abandoned Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall (Cultural Centre) at the same time.

Hon Rymer said plans will then be afoot to start with the rebuilding of the school.

My respect to you Hon. Kye Rymer, but why be in a rush to take on such heavy load of these two projects at a time when the whole world is experiencing economic pressures, due to high cost of construction items?
Do we have sufficient finances in hand or do we need to borrow cash at this point and time.
Local general election is fastly approaching, that is if the Unity Government fulfilled the CoI recommendations without fail. Honestly, I and many others will not agree that this is the right time to overload ourselves or burden ourselves with debt.
The tourist has began, but because of a recession that has already begun worldwide, to overburden our economy at this time with aim for re-election, in my opinion is selfishly unwise. Don't forget, good governance is our main goal.

Wisdom is the right uses of necessary knowledge in the right time.

Need money to rebuild, modernize our schools? Why not ask our resident billionaires who own their own islands (Necker/Moskito; Guana/Norman; and Eustatia) if they can help out. They should care about the next generation of islanders who will be their friends, neighbors and employees.

Is it that government buildings are poorly built that they have to be demolished all the time? Some of them that they destroy are not really that old.

Why is it that the government is not getting value for money when they erect these buildings? Poor workmanship? Substandard materials? Ill advice received from the 'professionals' involved?

Things that make voters go hmmmmmm!

Finally! Glad to hear the great news.

Killing 2 birds with one stone surely a good thought cause the school itself shouldn't take more than couple of days to demolish.

I just hope the rebuilding of the school is done as quick as the high school
