SEA COWS BAY, Tortola, VI- Word reaching our news centre from senior officials at the Department of Education and the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) is that current Ebenezer Thomas Primary School (ETPS) Principal Ms Ashkisha N. Maduro is tipped to be the new boss of ESHS.

She is expected to replace the outgoing Principal, Mrs Vanessa K. Garraway, who retired last year but was called back for another year and will leave office in July of 2026.

Ms Maduro has been at the ETPS for 3 years, having been appointed in July of 2023. She also taught as a business teacher at the same ESHS. It is unclear whether she was the one being groomed or was understudying for the post, as Ministry of Education Officials are tight-lipped about her appointment and the process.

A very good principal at ETPS

The ETPS Principal, Ms Maduro, made headlines in 2024 when the idea was floated by her and staff to change the uniform colours and school motto. Ms Maudro, who is known for her innovation, got some pushback from the old guards in the Sea Cows Bay area who attended the school decades ago, along with some members of the ETPS Parent Teachers Association.

The current uniform colours of brown and gold remained unchanged for some 67 years. While at the ETPS, Ms Maduro has had a successful tenure where there were major improvements in the school's leadership and innovation. She has partnered with many businesses and individuals for donations to the school, and is regarded as a progressive and a go-getter.

She has been very accessible to both parents, students and members of the community and continues to work on many of the social challenges of her students to ensure they are ready to learn.

The Ministry of Education has not made an official announcement on the replacement of Ms Garraway.

Efforts to get a comment from Ms Maduro, Mrs Garraway, Education Minister Hon Sharie B. de Castro (AL) and Chief Education Officer Orlandette R. Crabbe were unsuccessful.

What people do in their private life when they not on the government's time is their business. Once an educator shows up to work properly dressed and conducts themselves in a professional manner we cant bash them for it. If you live in a glass house don't throw stones. A lot of you have worst than Sandy and do it in the dark until VINO break the news on you and your family. Focus on the matter at hand, and stop getting side tracked.

Which one? None of the assistants or Maduro deserves the position. That school needs a male to steer the ship. Someone with morals, principles, and ain't afraid of the CEO and the minister. Mr Stoutt was a beast! They should have called him in to the ministry for advice a long time ago. Times have changed, but core values should not!

The PTA body of the school was given the opportunity to vote on the changes made! The only things that changed included the PE top colour changed to NAVY from White; the Mascot was changed from an eagle (which is used by 2 other schools) to a horse and the House Shirts added a horse and names of the horse, each house still carries their traditional name of past principals ...The core identity of the school still remains intact, just improved on. Now I know when you see those CHARGERS out, you know where they representing.

A public officer’s role is to carry out the mandate of the Minister. Too many of them want to do their own thing that’s why the public service has gone to the dogs. She got the highest score in the recruitment process and the interview panel recommended her for the job. Thats a FACT. Go fact check it. What yall keep skipping over is the political interference that came after from the minister. So spare people the fake outrage and “poor leadership” nonsense. Like her or not, the lady worked hard and made real contributions. Personal attacks and nasty comments can’t erase that.

For the sake of transparency and the betterment of ESHS I support the idea of Mrs. Todman - Stoutt for principal. Whilst Ms. Maduro does a good job at ETPS, I don’t think she has the experience to manage the secondary school. There’s a vast difference between primary and secondary level in every sense of the word and I definitely can’t see her managing this role effectively.

You on the outside looolking in, you have NO idea what Todman is REALLY like. You guys have to understand that some of these women only in Prinicpal position because NOBODY else wanted it. The ministry and department is scraping the bottom of the barrel. They wanted people who will not challenge them, and make hard decisions when they can't. Mr. Stoutt was the last real deal in that joint, all the rest of them were just fluff filling the seat. The school is a mess. If its not the electricity, its the water, its no resources to make simple copies, the plumbing, the mold, hell even toilet paper and hand soap is a stretch some days. Look at the demographics of the FIVE principals, really look at them. All they do is divide the staff, and let children and their parents rule the school, while teachers get blamed for everything. Sometimes teachers even get blamed for enforcing initiatives put forth by principals. A bundle of hog wash!!

Men need to be appointed over the school once more. The school's name sake was the last male principal, and since that time trouble has been brewing. Nothing personal against any of the recent principals, but let's get a male role model back in play before we loose completely loose a generation.

Why was this position not advertised, and why were persons not given a fair opportunity to apply for it? This is madness. If anyone deserved this position, it would be Mrs Todman. She has gone above and beyond for the school and has contributed significantly to making the school what it is today , fewer fights on campus and a more settled, productive school environment. Worse yet, the staff at ESHS has not even been notified. Smh.

I hear the persons that talk about advertising posts and giving everyone a fair chance to apply. However, with that group, this process is never fair. Had they gone through the ‘legal show’ it would have been a waste of time for numerous applicants as candidates are selected for positions before the applications are even submitted. Note: The Teaching Service Commission no longer interviews candidates. They simply rubber stamp everyone that Crabbe selects. That’s why many capable persons are overlooked. The main requirement that is need for these jobs is a personal friendship with the minister or CEO.

@ Well sah. Talk all the thing! You really seem to got the scoops because the school children say that comes September morning the newest cohort of Principals will run things in the BVi school system. Them say that Mrs. Alphonso from Lenora Delville going be the new Principal at Ebenezer Thomas and the ONeal girl from down West going be the principal at Leonora. With this backdrop, it is not surprising now to hear that Ms. Maduro will be the Principal at ESHS. I have one thing to say, these positions need to be advertised regardless of close friendships ties. And the minister needs to be careful because these unethical decisions may very well backfire.

decisions may very well upset the apple cart in the coming months.

You got this all correct with the expectation Crabbe doesn’t like Mrs.Alphonso so she will stay right that’s something I hear with my own ears from the horses mouth .She only give her the job “because “.So she need to watch her back and be careful with them snake.

She going give that hog wash Antiguan girl up EAPS who don’t have no manner or respect ETPS …That west girl going replace the hog wash up EAPS.

But the main requirement is FRIENDSHIP not qualification.

As someone mentioned above Shaunice Beyond the Decor Big Boss is a perfect example because Debra Hodge up and down and around town saying she didn’t send for this job them call she to come here to replace Shaunice because the minister and crabbe sayyy under them death body shaunice getting that job .

And trust and believe me shaunice ain’t the first nor the second nor the last …I going give other ppl a chance to list all the teachers that happen to !!!!

What I will say is check out all the young principals, they all came up under the CEO in some way, shape or form.

No, we don’t want Tanika as Principal either. Her demeanor is nasty but then again anything is possible with her sister being the Minister pssh.

If this news is indeed correct, sorry that Mrs Todman didn’t get a chance to prove herself in the position. Ms Maduro needed to come in as an Assistant Principal and learn the ropes first before becoming principal. It’ll be baptism by fire as primary and secondary are two different age groups of students with different needs.

Then we wonder why teacher morale is low and “don’t care.” Like a lot of teachers seriously don’t care and just going with the flow which is affecting the students as well.

Education is a social institution that is meant to create structure and foster development and the institution is a failure.

The school has fundamental issues that needs to be addressed. Separating the junior and seniors is one.

The other problem we have in this place is we cannot accept the truth when people tell it to us. We call it biasness, jealousy, ignorance, and whatever else we use to make ourselves feel better about what we hear about ourselves. Just because someone does not share the same views as you does not mean they are calling a person down. The school is being run by 5 principals who are trying, but its not working. The children are having sex, bringing alcohol on the campus, bringing drugs (MJ, honey packs, etc.) on the campus, etc and you STILL think people "bringing down"? People want a shift in leadership because who there now ain't hitting the nail on the head. Being principal of the largest school in the BVI is a hard job, you have to have a broad back and thick skin. This ain't time for nobody to get in their feelings, this is time for a change. We want somebody who could unite the staff and have their respect. We need somebody that ain't afraid to discipline children regardless of their last name. We need somebody who could put parents in their place when they go to the school "wilding out". And, we need somebody to tell the paper ushers down in the ministry and department of education to go kick rocks when they changing policies that did not need changing, and creating initiatives that have no data to support its purpose. Education looks good on paper, but to see them execute "their vision" is a mess. Even when it makes no sense they still doing it, just look at grade 12 for students who already write CXC!

Regardless of their friendship they need to leave Miss Alphonso at LDPS so she could continue her leadership there. The students and parents love her to the moon and back and it is unfair to be constantly disrupting the progress at this school. The children and the parents need stability if they are supposed to be successful. Last year they move JR to EAPS for their personal reasons. My child need to finish up his last two grades with Miss Alphonso so they need to send their friend the math bandit someplace else to be principal.

Mrs. Todman should have receive the principal position, yet it was ultimately given to someone else. This outcome is especially disappointing because she returned to school and earned her master’s degree specifically to qualify for this role, demonstrating her commitment, dedication, and long-term investment in the school community. She is widely respected and has helped teach and guide many staff members on how to effectively interact with and support students, especially high schoolers. Mrs. Todman truly deserved this position—she worked for it and rose from the bottom to the top through years of dedication and service. Her experience, leadership, and consistent contributions clearly showed she was prepared and deserving of the opportunity. Many feel the selected candidate does not reflect the same level of preparation or readiness for the role and may not be able to handle the demands of this position, making the decision difficult to understand. There is also a strong perception that personal bias may have influenced the outcome, raising concerns about fairness and transparency in the hiring process. Without her leadership, many worry the school will be in shambles and miss out on the stability and vision she could have provided. This is why I would never come home to work because everything goes by who you know and who like who y’all need to do better!
