Arawaks to take on Barbarians as Rugby comes home!

The Arawaks, led by National Captain Donovan Staple, have been gearing up for next Friday’s encounter having lost a hard fought battle last year.
However before that grudge match takes place there is a fiesta of Rugby to watch including the Inter Primary Schools Championship, which takes place today on the A.O.S and then next Friday’s action will be precluded by the Inter High School Championship.
Cedar School are current champions of both the Primary and High Schools, but much is expected of Francis Lettsome under coach Ralston Henry today. He has admitted Cedar are in his sights and has plans to go one better than losing last year’s final.
Mr Potter will no doubt have leaned on the Sports Department at Elmore Stoutt High School to come up with a plan to lift the High School Trophy.
Noel Maxwell of Cedar has already stated that it won’t matter as come Tournament time as Cedar are ready to lift each Division’s trophy.
Also on the schedule, is the final of the BVIRFU’s Corporate Touch Rugby Tournament next Wednesday down at Capoons Bay when the likes of RTW, Nanny Cay and Krys Global will be battling it out in a somewhat “milder” version of the full tackle and contact game that will be on show between the Arawaks and Barbarians.
The first match between the two Tortola based teams saw the younger, fitter and quicker Arawaks playing very well and they gave the more experienced Barbarian team a real scare, leading 7-5 heading into the final few minutes
However last year’s Annual Dinner guest speaker and former Samoan international captain Peter ‘Fats’ Fatiolofa came on and crashed over for what was to be the winning score to break Arawak hearts.
One year on and the Arawak team are seeing the benefit of the Under 19 program with Rory Thornton, Austin Kiel and Melvyn Knight looking poised to start alongside seasoned campaigners Victor ‘Game plan’ Franklyn, Andre Adams, Patrick Dennis, Tom Chapman and Captain Staple. However whilst last year the Barbarians had a relatively weak team, the trade winds have brought in several new players to the island, noticeably Matt Holmes, Matt Drum and Jon Addo; the additional physicality brought by these players promises to set up an interesting match-up of brute force and rugby nous verses Caribbean pace and flair. Rumour has it the Barbarians have put in a big money transfer for speedster Jerome ‘Inch’ Springette who has been promised a case of beer per try against his former team.
This year’s guest speaker, Irish international Ronan O'Gara will also be attending the game and it is unclear yet whether he will bring his boots, or more importantly whether he is an Arawak or a Barbarian!
According to Ronan Kuscjak “BVI Rugby looks forward to seeing the whole island down at the AO Shirley at 6pm on June 7. The public is asked to use the entrance from the police station end, sponsors Digicel have promised to have DJ Gadiethz pumping up the crowd and BVI Rugby looks forward to entertaining the whole island.”
The Annual Dinner will take place the following night, June 8, 2013 , at Scrub Island from 6pm.
