ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Drivers in the taxi industry are once again counting their loss of revenue with yet another cancellation of a Carnival Cruise Line vessel which was scheduled to make a call here in the Virgin Islands (VI) today January 9, 2014.

Last evening January 8, 2014, several taxi drivers attached to at least two taxi associations confirmed that they received a call from Romney Associates indicating that Carnival Breeze, which was initially schedule for the VI today, has been cancelled. “Yes we got the word from our dispatcher saying that the agent (Romney Associates) called to say Carnival Breeze has cancelled,” one driver confirmed.

Taxi Drivers have asked not to be named but are concerned about the second cancellation in such a short time. “This is the second Carnival Cruise that has been cancelled from the BVI in about a month or so,” stated one taxi driver. They were all loud in their complaints that the continuous cancellation of the calls to the VI is hurting the taxi and tourism industries.

This news agency, immediately after receiving the news last night, contacted Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable D. Orlando Smith who said that he was not in a position to discuss the subject at the time. “No I am sorry but I cannot discuss this with you at this time but negotiations are ongoing,” said Premier Smith.

Taxi Drivers said that up to press time, they have not heard a word directly from the Premier on several matters their representative body had brought to his attention. “We can only assume these continuing cancellation of Carnival has to do with the failure of the Premier to reach an agreement with them (Carnival) we have not heard a word so far so we can only assume at this stage,” said one taxi operator.

One veteran taxi operator further told this news site that he has had several bookings cancelled by persons scheduled for the VI on Caribbean Cruise Line vessels, for the month of February. “It’s not only for tomorrow, (today) but there are more cancellations coming for February and beyond because a number of my customers have cancelled saying that their cruise ship has informed them that they would not be making those calls to the BVI any longer,” the taxi driver allegedly claimed.

Efforts were also made to contact Chief Executive Officer of Carnival Cruise Line, Mr. Terry Thornton via email, but up to press time there was no response. Efforts to reach the responsible government minister, Minister for Communications and Works Honourable Mark H. Vanterpool and Romney Associates, were also futile.

Carnival Cruise Line had announced that they pulled port calls to the VI especially for the year 2015 since they could not be furnished with confirmation for berthing for the latter part of 2014 and for 2015. Minister Vanterpool had told this news site that he hadn’t been officially informed but was aware that the BVI Ports Authority could not furnish Carnival with dates for 2015.

Hon. Vanterpool had also said Government was in negotiations with Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) and Disney Cruise Line (DCL) and based on the outcome, Carnival Cruise Line (CCL) would have to negotiate berthing arrangements through the successful company. Carnival was not prepared to go that way.

Most recently, Premier Smith had announced publicly that he was taking the negotiations into his hands directly. At a press conference held on November 12, 2013, the Premier had declined to respond to questions on the negotiatiostatus ns only to say negotiations are ongoing.

I am going to laugh me behind off come next election and you all see VIP is not going to be any better. Haven't you all learned yet that VIP and NDP are the same old crooks competing against each other? I will sit back and say it loud "I TOLD YOU SO". I have been here my entire life and it has been bad for the last 20 years with no change. You are so gullible to fall for the same crap over and over voting one in and out for years. What we need is a new party to be given a chance to see where they will take us in the future.

Cancellation at short notice is nothing to do with politics. It's probably some operational problem such as weather, late arrival/departure of passengers, mechanical difficulties etc.

Lodger you got time responding to these fools. For them if it rains tomorrow it's Dr Smith fault as Minister of Finance. No reasoning at all but it makes them feel good so let them carry on.

What happens to all gov ministers once they sink this country so far in the ground it can't recover? Will they then pack up & leave the country since nothing will be left?

That's what I heard, the bad weather in the US forced the cancellation of the trip. No sense setting sail if half of your passengers did not make it to the ship.

whether VIP or NDP.. if the persons we elect are greedy and crooked, nothing good will come out. Don't you see that it is just a cycle of one party trying to blame each other for their faults?

If it floods tomorrow, it's DDM fault. If they're rejected for a bank loan tomorrow, it's Ministry of Finance fault. If their business fails tomorrow, it's Trade fault. If a Spanish woman take their husband tomorrow, is Immigration fault. If they lose their job because they keep coming late, not doing their work etc. to an expat, it's Labour fault. If they can't get their house rent out, it's Town & Country/Planning fault. If they don't pay their BVIEC bill and light is cut, it's Ministry of C&W fault. They neglect their child, he/she fails, it's Myron's fault. Do you guys understand now?? Everything is Government fault so please don't be afraid of filing with the Complaints Commish. Peace!

Today everything is a problem and there is only hopelessness and desolation on the faces of my fellow B V Islanders and it saddened my heart to see what the NDP government have brought the BVI and its people to.

I don't think the BVI is going to see better days anytime soon, the state of our economy is not something good to talk about, the unemployment rate is too high, the NDP lack of sound policies is putting the country deeper into poverty, foreign investors are afraid to come here because of the crime rate, and the list goes on and on....it's a reality, plain and simply.
