SEA COWS BAY, Tortola, VI- Due to her consistency and discipline over the years, for many it may not come as a surprise that Ms Aniyah J. Williams is not only the top student for the British Virgin Islands Seventh-day Adventist School at the 2023 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Examinations but that she has attained a Grade One for all her subjects written.

The 17-year-old Williams received eleven (11) Grade Ones. The subjects written were Mathematics, English, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Principles of Business, Social Studies, Spanish, Electronic Document Preparation & Management, Human & Social Biology, and Family and Research Management.

Her achievement can be recorded as one of the best ever at CSEC in the [British] Virgin Islands.

Williams told Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) she was “surprised” by her results even though she had prepared, admitting she was never fully confident going into the exams or even while taking the exams.

Faith in God

The top student credited her faith in God as the main foundation of her successful journey. “His guidance and blessings have not only given me the strength and determination to face challenges but also the wisdom to make the right choices.”

Aniyah J. Williams is the daughter of Jailann and Azim Williams.

“Their dedication to my success was evident in every little thing they did for me. By taking on tasks that would otherwise occupy my time, they provided me with more time, which is a valuable commodity during exam preparations. They also gave me a space free from distractions, allowing me to immerse myself fully in my studies," Williams said of her proud parents.

Williams had graduated from the BVI SDA School as Valedictorian and was also Valedictorian at Agape Total Life Academy where she received her elementary education.

Gratitude to teachers

With an attitude of gratitude, Williams thanked her teachers at the BVI SDA School “for their guidance and for ensuring I was equipped with the knowledge and skills that I needed to pass the tests. Thank you for believing in my abilities even when I doubted myself.”

Meanwhile, Principal Wade W. Tobin described Ms Williams as a very studious, analytical, and consistent student.

“She has an affable personality in addition to being humble.”

Principal Tobin also said Aniyah’s results were not surprising since she has always been one to push herself to accomplish more.

“I also admire that she was a very rounded student because she has been well engaged in extracurricular activities,” Mr Tobin said.

While Williams engaged in various sports while at the school, she was particularly successful as a track athlete.

Career in medicine

Meanwhile, Williams is now attending H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HSCC) and is reading for an Associate’s Degree in General Science.

“I'm leaning towards a career in medicine, but I'm still unsure about the specific path,” Williams shared.

Leaving some words of encouragement to students at BVI SDA School, Williams urged them to trust the work that they have put in and know that it’s "okay" to seek help when needed.

“Believe in your potential, and when the day of the exam comes be confident because you know how hard you worked to get there.”

Other top performers

Meanwhile, Principal Tobin also credited the devoted teachers who have given “much fasting and praying for the students” throughout their senior years. He indicated that their efforts were commendable.

The other top-performing students at CSEC from the BVI SDA School were Angelique Gurley, Kaylah Vanterpool, Khemoe Foy Jr, Rhyan Prince, and Naomi Thompkins.

While other schools including public schools have not publicly disclosed results of the 2023 CSEC Examinations, the last academic school year (2021-2022) saw the BVI SDA School placed 2nd among the Territory’s top performing CSEC students.

Mr Tobin was proud also to note that the institution had the highest percentage pass rate of all the Secondary schools in the Caribbean Union of Adventist School; from Trinidad in the South to the [British] Virgin Islands in the North.

The BVI SDA School located in Sea Cow’s Bay is a K-12 Seventh-day Adventist Educational Institution, which was established in 1954.

The institution has as its motto ‘We Persevere for Excellence’.

Happy for the young lady. SDA school has produced many brilliant minds, yet some of ahyo does call down the church so bad when it is the true church of God who keeps the 7th day as the Sabbath. I am sure this young lady has left SDA school with good Christian morals. Aniyah, I am sure you learnt about the Sabbath. I pray that I will see you in church one day. God blessings upon you.

Heartfelt congratulations to Aniyah for a phenomenal achievement.. Eleven Grade Ones takes hard work and prerseverance. Congratulations to you and your Mom and Dad and Aunty and whoever assisted in focusing and assisting in this achievement. News like this always puts a smile on my face. Achieveable only through being goal driven on a daily. Keep striving, Young Lady. You Rock!!!! P.S. The Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital could use someone with your brains and focus. Food for thought.
