THE SETTLEMENT, Anegada, VI – Work on the Anegada Solar Project is progressing smoothly as Minister for Health and Social Development, Vincent O. Wheatley (R9) said Anegada was the ideal location to pilot this initiative.

On Monday, August 18, 2025, Minister for Communications and Works, Hon. Kye Rymer, led a delegation of officials, which also included Hon Wheatley, Premier and Minister of Finace Dr. the Hon Natalio Wheatley, General Manager of BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) Dr. Neil M. Smith, and electrician and contractor Sean Hartley, to Anegada for an update on the project.

The Government of the Virgin Islands, in collaboration with BVIEC and the U.S.-based Power52 Clean Energy Access, broke ground on the project in December 2022; however, full progress has not yet been realised.

The project aims to replace Anegada's reliance on diesel generators with solar power, significantly reducing energy costs and advancing the VI's goal of achieving 100% renewable energy.

Witnessing a vision come true

During a live update on the Ministry of Communications and Works' Facebook page, 9th District Representative Hon. Vincent O. Wheatley stated, "I stood here in 2019 and mentioned that one day, Anegada would be powered by solar, not diesel. Today, those words have come to fruition, and we are witnessing that vision."

He praised the Premier for initiating this project, emphasising that Anegada is an ideal location to ensure the island remains pristine.

The Anegada Solar Project reflects the government's commitment to renewable energy and to preserving the environment.

Renewable energy on Anegada is just the beginning for the Territory

Hon. Wheatley added, "This is a great place to start, but we will not stop here in Anegada. This will serve as proof of concept, demonstrating that what we've done is effective."

He expressed optimism that similar projects will be implemented on other islands, including Virgin Gorda, Tortola, and Jost van Dyke, soon.

The 9th District Representative reiterated that the Government of the Virgin Islands is fully committed to achieving 60% or more renewable energy by 2030.

You all finished it, as you should, but you didn't start it. Give all the credit where it's deserving.

    Not finished?!!!!

"This project, WHEN COMPLETED during the FIRST QUARTER OF 2023, is projected to reduce the current volume of fossil fuel used to produce electricity on that Sister Island by 95 percent."

"The BVI Electricity Corporation’s then-general manager, Leroy Abraham, and then-chairwoman, Rosemarie Flax, announced in July 2020 that Power52 Clean Energy Access had won the contract to build the Anegada solar farm.

Nov 5 2021 BVI Electricity Corporation and the American-based solar energy company officially inked a 300-page contract.

    Broke ground Dec 2022.

    Dec 2025 coming up.

"Despite significant delays and doubts about its completion, the Anegada Renewable Energy & Battery Storage plant is 40 percent complete and is set to come online SOME TIME IN 2024.That’s the assurance given by BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) Deputy General Manager Symorne Penn."
“Hopefully we can see that project come to completion very soon, hopefully EARLY 2025 and the electricity woes over there will be a thing of the past,” Premier Wheatley stated on Tola Radio VI today, September 19, 2024."

We using that Mr. Anslem Myers VI clock again.

gonna have to put more panels up on the land you suppose to give out to the anegada people

Aren't those panels prone to loss due to hurricane winds? It seems like a major investment that's vulnerable to hurricane force winds.
It's one of my biggest concerns when getting into solar panels. When a hurricane is on its way, I gotta close my window shutters, secure my property, prepare generator and fuel, take down satellite dishes and now take down panels as well? Always Hated that idea.
This seems good but not adequately secured against strong winds.
