ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Last Sunday, May 6, 2012, over 50 cyclists boarded Speedy's "Peace Maker" and headed for the Annual Anegada Mountain Bike Race, hosted by the BVI Mountain Bike Club.

The main course event took the cyclists over a mixed terrain of paved road, rough and jagged coral trails road and sandy tracks. Gareth Thomas was eager to defend his title but Orano Andrews surged ahead early in the race and managed to keep ahead to take the win in 1 hour 17 minutes followed closely by Thomas a minute later. Antony Spencer and Alastair Abrehart came in 3rd and 4th and new comer to mountain biking Craig Allan impressively took fifth place. First female across the line was Carolina Pettigrew in 1 hour 32 minutes followed by Kim Takeuchi and Dara Smith.. It was interesting to note that although the race course was around 5 miles longer in distance this year, the times were approximately the same as last year. The faster paced race was attributed to the firmer sand along the north shore with far less soft spots allowing the cyclists greater average speed. A special mention goes to Virgin Gorda Mountain Biker Anghel George who was accidentally misdirected on the course which resulted in him completing two laps of the the course. This is the first time in the history of the race that anyone has achieved this incredible feat. George was awarded 6th place overall reflecting the position he would have crossed the finish line had he not been misdirected.

For the first time this year there was a "Guided Ride" where three experienced cyclists, namely Gary Wilson, Clint Jones and Chris Ghiorse took ten mountain bikers including a twelve year old boy, some strong and determined teenagers and four women around the 20 mile main event course at a steady but relaxed pace with many breaks and refreshment stops along the way. This allowed the participants to easily cover the main course 20 miles distance at a leisurely pace over a period of about 3 hours. This was so successful that we are going to make it a regular option at our future events to allow anybody and everybody to take part and to keep our pledge of promoting mountain biking for all in the BVI.

There was one lone Fun Novice participant. Well done Sally-Ann Riley from Virgin Gorda who took the 5 mile challenge in 40 minutes...and won!!
