Andrea K.R. Wilson is ‘simply grateful’ after NYFW debut
The showcase, ‘I’Landed in the Big Apple’, also marked the 10th anniversary of her swim and resort wear label, The Islander.
Featured during the show were more than 20 new designs from her latest collection, Ocean Odyssey, as well as pieces from her earlier Wave Collection.
Simply grateful
“It was an experience…There were hiccups — a venue change, flight delays — but I am simply grateful,” Wilson said in a press release.
She thanked her family, friends, the models and her extraordinary team who worked tirelessly to make the showcase a reality.
Approximately 30 models, representing the Virgin Islands, Guyana, St Kitts and Nevis, the United Kingdom and the United States, took part in the show.
Wilson also thanked Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), who flew to New York to participate in the show.
He wore designs by Wilson and fellow Virgin Islands creative Germain Smith, who owns the label Kym’Asia.
Emerging designer Morgan Creque, founder of Trippy Tortuga, also presented work during the evening.
Ammique Mills of Artistry created jewellery for the showcase.
Former Miss British Virgin Islands Universe World Ayana K. Phillips, also known as DJ Lady Mix, curated the soundtrack, infusing the space with Caribbean rhythm and energy.
The future
Wilson sees her New York debut as a signal to wider ambitions.
“Next year we will elevate the experience even further in New York City,” she said. “By year’s end, we are setting our sights on Africa.”
The showcase was filmed as part of a reality series in development documenting Wilson’s path to New York Fashion Week.
There are plans for international broadcast and festival screenings across the United States and Europe.
