WICKHAM’S CAY I, Tortola, VI- Tortola Pier Park Ltd. (“Pier Park”) is aware that many in the community have seen and shared images and videos showing the condition of The Lawn following the removal of VISAR’s Winter Wonderland ice-skating rink, and we understand the concern this has caused.

When planning the holiday season, The Lawn was deliberately selected as the location for VISAR’s Winter Wonderland to encourage movement throughout the Pier Park and ensure that increased foot traffic would benefit all tenants, rather than concentrating activity in one isolated area.

Decision was made for Christmas Coney Island

This decision was also made in anticipation of a Christmas Coney Island attraction on Lot 5, which was intended to further expand family-friendly entertainment and create balance across the property. While the Christmas Coney Island attraction ultimately did not materialise, the goal of providing inclusive family entertainment was achieved through the introduction of the Pier Park Fun Zone: Holiday Edition, which currently offers rides and activities for children and families throughout the season.

The Lawn remained in continuous use throughout the Christmas period as part of these holiday events. Given the intensity and duration of that use, we anticipated that once the skating rink and supporting structures were removed, the area would show visible wear. This was expected and planned for. For this reason, and as part of our discussions and negotiations with VISAR, arrangements were made for the replacement of the existing grass surface with Astro Turf, which is being sponsored by VISAR.

upgrade needed

This upgrade has long been identified as necessary for a space that regularly hosts community gatherings and large-scale events. The Astro Turf has been ordered and is currently in transit; however, delivery has been delayed due to shipping congestion associated with the Christmas season.

At this time, the space is in a temporary transition phase. While we await the arrival of the materials, interim measures are being put in place to improve the appearance of the area and ensure it remains safe and usable.

We appreciate the community for raising their concerns and for caring about this shared space. We also wish to thank VISAR for their partnership and support.
Committed to continued improvement

Tortola Pier Park Ltd.remains committed to the continued improvement of all aspects of the Pier Park from infrastructure and public spaces to events, amenities, and the overall guest experience so that the facility continues to serve the community in a meaningful and sustainable way.

As we move into the New Year, we also look forward to welcoming the community to our New Year’s Eve celebrations at the Pier Park in just a few days’ time. These events are about bringing people together, celebrating the season, and enjoying the space we all share.

We invite everyone to join us as we close out the year and welcome the new one together.

why would a commercial venture like TPP accept sponsorship of anything from VISAR which is a charity and needs to raise funds to stay in operation?

I disagree that fake grass is in any way an "upgarde"

definitely a downgrade. Sure, a natural lawn requires maintenance, but we don't seem to understand that concept around here so no wonder its considered an "upgrade"

The funny part is, fake grass needs to be maintained as well, I sure even more than real grass cause there will be no proper draining if the soil is covered number one, and what ever nonsense spills on there will not reach the soil either, it will stay on the surface...I hope they thought of this as well. and not to mention yall introducing toxic plastic to the skin of ppl children. I hope they know what they doing

Just when I thought that I have seen the highest level of stupidity and ego hungry people, here comes the folks at TeePeePee. How you gone issue a statement that you expected the wear and tear to the lawn when you act like a b!+3h when you saw the grass is brown. Wah school you went to or little common sense would tell you that the grass will dry up if it don’t get sun? But you order the artificial grass to replace it…. Really? Is that better? the people of the BVI enjoyed the VISAR sponsored skating rink, now how about you be patient, call in one of the many landscaping companies, have them treat the grass and in time it will flourish again. Why is VISAR sponsoring de fake grass when the activity there was to raise funds? Man ayo is a sick set of people. Management need to goooo goooo gone gone. Common sense ain’t conmon messon. I can guess who first took the pics and start this whole mess, the one lady that was making a fuss but she customer them ain’t seeing properly. Ayo sick in ayo head.

Lolol it does really surprise me how these kinds of folk end up with these kind of decision making positions, cause if they originally had common sense, they would have expected this to happen and made a plan from early to make a move to bring in the same toxic artificial grass they going on with now. You can obviously tell they might've thought the grass would look green still when all those stuff come up off of it, but no, they wait till now to talk about replacement AFTER the fact. They had no clue lololololol

I am one of the owners of Mac's Restaurant Ltd. For your information, I posted no photos nor videos after the rink was taken up. Like other tenants, I was concerned about the general ambience of the park and not just whether our customers could see properly. We all saw what unfolded in the end. You made some good points in your post. I would just caution you in the future about making certain assumptions about persons without finding out the facts. We all care about our environment. Like you I believe the original grass should have been treated instead of replacing it with artificial grass. Nothing is wrong with letting our collective voices be heard on issues like these where common spaces are shared by all. Happy New Year all!
