ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- American Airlines (AA) will be making a return to the [British] Virgin Islands on June 1, 2023, and persons can start booking their seats as early as tomorrow, December 3, 2022.

This is according to Deputy Premier and Minister for Communications and Works Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5) at a press conference alongside Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) minutes ago, Friday, December 2, 2022.

"This morning I am elated to announce that we have been given the confirmation to publicly release that starting 1st June 2023, American Airlines will begin direct flights between the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport at Beef Island and the Miami International Airport on mainland USA and American Airlines have simultaneously issued a press release to this effect," Hon Rymer said.

The Minister said persons will be able to book their seats as early as December 3, 2022.

American Airlines will be using an Embraer 1 e75 Aircraft for the service to the [British] Virgin Islands.

'Strong demand for Miami travel'- American Airlines

American Airlines in a press release today said this year has seen a strong demand for Miami travel and is looking forward to servicing the VI as a destination that its customers love.

It said the new seasonal flight, operated daily by Envoy with an Embraer E175 aircraft, will start on June 1, 2023 and will run through the summer, restarting again in November.

“We are proud to operate as the leading airline in South Florida, offering our customers an unrivaled network in the Caribbean and Latin America with service from the Miami hub to more than 70 destinations in the region,” said Juan Carlos Liscano, American Airlines Vice President – Miami.

“This year demand has remained strong for Miami travel, and we’re looking forward to further growth in 2023 with a new and unique destination in the Caribbean that our customers love – the British Virgin Islands,” Liscano added.

Daily flight schedule

American Airlines detailed that the flight will leave Miami at 10:25 am and arrive at Beef Island around 1:20 pm and then depart Beef Island at 2:30 pm and arrive in Miami around 5:30 pm.

After almost 27 years of service, American Airlines, under American Eagle, made its last flight from the Virgin Islands in May 2013, as it continued its gradual phase-out from the Caribbean. American Airlines' interest in Caribbean destinations has since returned.

More details to follow.

Flights from Beef Island to Florida are expensive to begin with and with a direct flight imagine the cost.

Even though the flights might cost a bit factor in your boat ticket and other cost when traveling through the USVI before complaining.

The richest people in the world spend wisely.

Budgeting and using common sense when spending does not mean they can’t afford it.

@ not so fast. I would rather pay extra for convenience. I have been traveling from Tortola on a ferry to St. Thomas for many years. Wait in line outside for a ticket, then pay a departure tax, get scanned, then wait in the waiting area, then wait to board the ferry, then get off the ferry to go through US Immigration, then go outside to get a taxi to the airport, then go through immigration at the airport to get checked in, etc etc etc. By then I am completely exhausted and now have to wait for my departing flight to go to wherever I am traveling to. This one-time boarding here in Tortola airport will be much more relaxing to get to my destinations. I have traveled both ways flying or ferrying out of Tortola just to save a few bucks. I'm done with all of that now.

Its not a big plane - maybe 85 pax, still we need to improve infrastructure for pax arrivals and departures. No way the current set up can work

Sound all good. I hope that the BVI economy will greatly benefit from this expected venture. But on on the other hand, what if a major crash or crashes of large passenger carrying planes or jets crashe at T. B Lettsome Airport, that will cause many casualties? Are we prepared for such a desastrous outcome?
I hope that no such a desaster Will accure in the near future, but sooner or later such will happen. Whether there or here, when the leaders of any country are short sighted or their vision is being blurred, the price the citizens must pay is costly high. Invest in preparation now.

will local government be subsidizing this as per usual and at what cost

A 70 seater aircraft non-stop on a 2 hour sector wont be cheap: with fuel cost these days

Try extending the runway so aircraft with more seating can call into beef island

hope all works well sick of going via usvi

That would be nice, but the BIVAA have to expand their security checkpoint plus they need to hire people from being short staff I travelled through Tortola a lot BECAUSE I LOVE THE BVI

You are so correct! Imagine 70 persons get off to the slow show which is Customs and Immigration at the airport. If anyone is spending 1500+ round trip we need to ensure that they have a good experience. This could be a good thing, we just need to prepare and hire some people and train them in customer service.

This is great news for all of the BVI. The connectivity to the rest of the world will have immense economic trickle down effect.

The people have asked for this for many years. It is being delivered to them. Let’s have some national pride and come together on this.

The Government and the BVI Airports Authority have done a great job. I hope they continue to support the BVIAA as there is a lot of good work going on at the airport nowadays.

This is good news;however, with current state of immigration space, it sounds like we biting more than we can chew.
Imagine having Liat,Intercaribbean a few Cape air flights on the ground with all these passengers waiting in line ti be pricessed immigration and customs space is small so I hope BVIAA, will consider joining the welcome center as a immigration process station then custom should be where immigration presently stand....just my two cents. I would love to see this materialize in a professional manner and not seeing all the arrival passengers waiting on the outside of immigration door on arrival.. 1)Add a corridor from welcome center to present immigration department small joining for convenience. .
    2) change security set up. If customers are travelling private, they shouldn't need the use the access gate. create, a straight security path through the main airport entrance wich will give easy access to the government VIP roomshould be considered , there are three screening machines it can happen, then finally hire more security officers.
