Althea Scatliffe Primary still awaits fix to leaking roofs

The Althea Scatliffe Primary School is awaiting its roofs to be fixed.
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- With some four classrooms affected whenever there is a heavy downpour due to leaking roofs, the elementary school with the largest intake of students in the Territory, Althea Scatliffe Primary, is hoping that the problem would be addressed soon.

Principal of the school, Mrs. Marieta Flax-Headley told Virgin Islands News Online over a week ago that the school, which usually tries to help itself through its own fundraisers, sees the project to be too much for it to undertake and is depending on Government to fix.

She did say that the previous Minister for Education and Culture, Andrew Fahie had promised to have it included in this year’s budget and that he had already sent persons to have the estimates done.

“We know government takes time and we know the paperwork has already been in for our windows and for our roof because there are some leaking problems,” Mrs Flax-Headley had said at the opening of the academic year in September.

The school recently received a complete upgrade to their playground after it was deemed out-dated and in dire need of fixing as the students were also not keen on using the facilities.

Work on the playgrounds had started under the previous administration.

Meanwhile, the school received much attention recently when Minister for Education and Culture Hon. Myron Walwyn issued a directive for a slogan on the exterior of the school building to be removed which has since been removed.

Good gracious! Where is our priority??? Seems to me that the leaks in the school should have take presidence over a playground. Let the children make do with what they already have and focus on more pressing issues (LIKE GETTING WET WHILE TRYING TO CONCENTRATE ON LESSONS!!!) This whole country going backward and that is from the time HLStoutt dead, regardless of who in government. Lawd why somebody didnt' clone Lavity b4 he died???? We would have been better off.

Hush your stupid mouth! It took the so called 'island man' Myron to halt the MILLION DOLLAR FENCE, a contract issued to VIP's CHAIRMAN (or consultant he says LOL), to reallocate the funds from that stupid project and fix the rundown library and other things in the school. Same as what VIP? Find out how much they spent on the new playground that was put there months ago, while they were already aware that the damn school was leaking, then you tell me. Nobody can be as incompetent and careless as the last VIP Administration, NOBODY!! They put a million dollar fence and hundred thousand dollar food tents in the High School campus while our kids sit in 10 cent class rooms! You all don't have any shame in defending these people? MY goodness! The last admin didn't realize the place was overgrown in bush, overgrown in sewerage, overgrown in trash, unsightly, etc. etc. etc. Not even a good solid 2 months in power and much of this has been addressed LOL! Stop playing politics and give jack his jacket! I'm and NDp supporter but if they do nonsense I WILL MAKE MY MOUTH LOUD! I'm not a blind supporter, any honest person must say they're doing alright so far!

VIP never had any million dollar fence so stop giving miss information. Also the VIP chairman never give out any contracts so if these and the other nonsense is what Myron telling ayo then he got a long morning ahead of him because we ain't got time with gossip, we want the facts and we want results. The library was already designed, costed and next in line to be fixed & Myron knows this. Election is over so let's get on with fulfilling all them promises Myron promise we because I voted for him & don't want any more excuses.

Real talk, I hope you ain jumping out of your shorts at me, because I totally agree with you. Rather than focusing on a play ground, they (VIP) should have taken care of what was essential!!!!! They are the ones who had their priorities screwed up. So if your comment is directed at me, HOLD IT DOWN BOSS, we on the same team!!!

You people make everything a political fight and it is sickening. How come all of a sudden because this school hit headline over the removal of a sign here it is a week later with complaints about a leaking rook that the former government obviously did not see it as priority either. Hmm, Priority was given to approve a sign and not to approve the fixing of a leaking roof? Nonsense!!!!!! ALL AH YOU NEED TO STOP THE NOISE!!!

Well, well...She put all the emphasis on the stupid sign but now we hear that the classrooms leaking, which is something Myron has already said he plans to address at all schools. Only 5 comments on this, but it had over 50 looking to hang the damn man for removing the stupid sign. He didn't make much of it, it was the commenters, the Principal and others with ulterior motives who made much a do about NOTHING!! It's really sickening! The monies donated for the two new signs and the new playground should've been allocated to at least start fixing leaking problems! I would've been ashamed to put this information out there, really!

I agree. The monies for the sign should have been put towards the leaking roof knowing that it has been happening for such a long time. Also, why is this school being used in politic up rest. This is unprofessional and need not be done. I believe someone need to advice the principle on what is acceptable and what is not. You have a problem with the Minister of Education deal with him directly, stop using the School in confusion. Gather reputable credentials, draft your letter and seek an audience with him. Ensure you have someone to witness on your end and he should have his secretary on his end and have a meeting with him. We know from couple of the last comments made that the roof and other fixtures in the school and other schools are on the list of stuff to be done by the government. Give them till February or end of March and if this is not done have the teachers, parents/PTA draft and sign a petition; send it to the media/web and see if that speeds up the work. I am not a VIP or NDP by the way. I believe that everything we do should be done with the right motives to obtain the right results.

SHE'S RIGHT! Let the principal make her point! Instead the minister be a bitch towards a slogan on the wall he should take a visit inside and see the conditions after all not everyone can send their child to the schools his kids attend.

Monete, I don't know if you have access to local media that I don't, but please show me where Myron has spent more than 5 mins on this issue. He spoke to her about the slogan weeks ago, he emailed her telling her it needs to be removed and he issued a release with the reason for the removal. That's all he did! All this to incite infighting!! All Myron has talked about since being elected and appointed Minister of Education is fixing the schools. He spoke about stopping all unneccessary works and focusing on class rooms, libaries etc. But check those stories, NO COMMENTS!!!! The man has proven that he has the kids' interest at heart which is why he avoided the conflict and didn't push the slogan issue. It's the online media, the principal, radio and some other confusion makers in our community making it an issue. I remember about 2yrs ago, Ms. Amey, Principal of BVI HS said that girls who experienced their period were unable to change for an entire day due to the state of the bathrooms, other students couldn't use the bathroom for the entire day. NO COMMENTS ON THAT!! But all of a sudden we have a week load of radio jocks and talk show hosts talking about the way a sign was removed! We are our own worst enemy and chose to pay attention to negative vs. positive. Look at the stories, look at how many comments to stories about BVIFA issue scholarships, the disabled young lady at BVIHS and her accomplishments, Ms Teen BVI travelling abroad to represent us, look at those stories, no comments or hardly!! Ya'll need help!

I'm final happy to see a valid issue addressed after some much time was wasted over arguments over a signage, these are the issues that should be bothering to us and not the removal of a sign. It's also amazing to see that if the school roof needed to be fixed from before, instead of having the sponsor donate monies to erect a sign why didn't you as the principal see it fitting that they put the monies towards something much more appropriate like hmmmm fixing the roof. Our children are our future and when they see us as the adults being petty and bickering over things that are not necessary what else should they become. parents and teachers, i say teacher because apart from the parents they are one of the most influential people in our children's lives live bu example, we have to set a good example for our kids.
