Alliance meeting with Governor undermines VI pushback against UK- Skelton-Cline

Undermining our path
With this in mind, he has since openly questioned the motives behind a recent meeting between members of the Opposition, led by Leader Honourable Myron V. Walwyn (R6), and Governor Daniel Pruce, despite apparent bipartisan unity on the issue in the House of Assembly.
Skelton-Cline gave his observation during the April 29, 2025, broadcast of Honestly Speaking, warning that the UK's position charts a footprint for the Virgin Islands until 2035 without adequate input from the people it directly affects.
He described the UK’s actions as paternalistic and akin to “dictating and determining for a people how they should live” without consultation. “There’s something fundamentally wrong with that,” he said, accusing the UK of taking a unilateral and colonial-style approach, and chided, “I see this report as an undermining of our path to self-determination.”
As such, while he applauded the unity shown by the entire House in pushing back against the report, he reserved criticism for the Opposition, particularly the political grouping known as the Alliance, for holding a separate meeting with the Governor on the same matter.
“I did find it curious, that the Alliance, on their own recognisance, chose to go and have a meeting with the Governor; One has to question the motivation as to why the Leader of the Opposition and a portion of the Opposition would branch off on their own and do that. It begs the question.”
Not the time to play politics
In his characteristic rhetorical style, he declared, “I’m too old a cat to be fooled by kittens” and demanded clarity and transparency from the elected officials, asking bluntly, “Where is the letter? Has that letter been drafted? Has that letter been circulated? Have all 13 members had an opportunity to review and weigh in on said correspondence?”
Citing a mentor—a white lawyer and seminarian from Texas—Skelton-Cline warned of the dangers of disunity. “White people and rich people don’t care if you hate them as long as you keep hating each other; Because your division is their strength.” He, as such, urged the entire House to rise above party politics in the face of external threats. “This is not the time to play politics.”
According to Skelton-Cline, “We have a situation where our administrative power continues to put forward documents that will undermine our path to self-determination.” This, he said, places a heavy burden of responsibility on the 13 elected officials and as such, “It’s not enough for you just to sign off on this letter.”
According to the outspoken commentator, “It is important for each district and at-large member to be responsible for mobilising the rest of the community in support of the position of this country; Failure to do that, will be a dereliction of duty.” To this end, he was adamant, “...this is a fight for our future.”
