ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- It will be show time in a matter of hours when the popular Miss Teen BVI Scholarship Pageant is held this evening at the Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium, H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) campus in Paraquita Bay.

The audience, Virgin Islands News Online was told, can expect an exciting display of culture, intelligence and youthful talent from the four delegates, who are all students of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College.

Miss Teen BVI 2011 Aschellica Fahie will also make her final speech and walk as is customary before crowning the new queen.

Apart from the promise of a sharp 7PM start, Pageant Promoter Mr. Rupert Vanterpool said the audience can also expect to be highly entertained between segments by a number of local artistes as well as a dancer from St. Thomas, USVI.

The contestants vying for the coveted crown are 17 year olds Kamyce Penn, Erika Renae Creque, Keje Hendrickson and Shamoia Kiara Maduro.

Contestant #1- Kamyce Penn

Miss Penn, who hopes to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Studies says her ambition is to become a professional singer since this would give her the opportunity to express herself through song and to also assist others, especially in the Virgin Islands, who are also interested in becoming professional singers.

Miss Penn has great admiration for Mrs. Eileene Lucia Parsons, who she said has inspired many in the fields of Education, Politics, Culture and Sports.

Her platform is Health and Wellness.  "Health is very important, as it is the art of helping people change their lifestyle towards the best possible state of health. And Wellness is making conscious choices towards a healthy lifestyle."

Miss Penn should be beaming with confidence on Saturday since she has pageantry experience. She competed in the 2010 Miss Fifth Form Pageant and was successful in capturing that title.

Contestant #2- Erika Renae Creque

On completing her Associate's Degree at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community college, Miss Creque intends to further her studies overseas where she plans on becoming a Civil & Environmental Engineer, before returning to contribute to the development of her homeland.

Miss Creque says she admires her best friend Macy John the most, "because of her positive attitude and determination. Macy is an inspiration to as well because even after the loss of her mother, she didn’t allow the misfortune to get to her and keep her from being a strong person that she is and a helping hand to both family and friends".

Her platform is National Pride "because it is the love, passion and adoration for the place we call home; that should inspire each and every one of us  to take ownership, protect and preserve; our rich history, culture and identify as “Nature’s Little Secret” for the people of the British Virgin Islands, our visiting tourist and future generations; and with my platform if crowned, Miss Teen British Virgin Islands 2012, I will work hand in hand with the BVI Tourist Board, Ministry of Education and Culture, and the Social Development Department to promote my message through social events, school meeting and presentations and community workshops".

Miss Creque also participated in the 2010 Miss Fifth Form Pageant.

Contestant#3- Keje Hendrickson

A student of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College, Miss Hendrickson plans to attend Berkley College of the Performing Arts in New York. "My life ambition is to become a professionally trained songstress and actress."

Miss Hendrickson also has strong admiration for Mrs. Eileene Parsons, "because of her dedication to keeping B.V. I. culture alive, her pleasant and willing attitude towards her service, and her strength and fortitude despite her disabilities".

The 1st runner-up at the Miss Fifth Form 2011 Pageant has chosen Depression among the Youth as her platform. "I plan to raise awareness of this illness by setting up radio and television ads advising the best places where people suffering from this mental illness can get help and also, by setting up support groups where the youth can vent their frustrations. This, in turn, would decrease the suicide rate and make for a more peaceful society."

Contestant #4- Shamoia Kiara Maduro

The only contestant without pageantry experience, Miss Maduro is currently pursuing an Associate’s Degree in General Studies at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College and plans to continue her educational journey and to earn a Masters in Architectural Engineer.

Her favourite Virgin Islander is her grandmother, Mrs. Dorothea Maduro also known as Teacher Dorothea. "Education is the key to success and my grandmother was the key to many successful people in our society. Her dedication, drive and commitment within the education field in the BVI has inspired me and that is why I have chosen my grandmother; Mrs. Dorothea Maduro."

Miss Maduro's platform is Discouraging gang violence in the VI. "I believe if we educate our youths about the negative effects gang violence have on our social while encouraging positivity would help make a better today, brighter tomorrow, and a greater British Virgin Islands."

Meanwhile, this news site was told that the contestants had their own chaperones preparing them for the big show; however, the pageant committee was responsible for working with the girls on the opening group dance.

Miss Teen BVI 2012 will receive a $3000 scholarship for any college of her choice. She will also get $750 cash prize and the opportunity to represent the VI at the Digicel Haynes Smith Caribbean Talented Teen Pageant in St. Kitts in December, Miss Caribbean Talented Teen Pageant in Anguilla in May and another pageant in St. Vincent and the Grenadines in March. In addition to that, the queen will participate in parades around the region.

Advance tickets cost $20 for adults and $15 for children under 10 years of age while door price would be $25 for adults and $15 for children under 10.

Sponsors include the Premier’s Office, Zrod, JTV and Department of Education.

"It’s going to be one of the best shows in the BVI. All the girls are very smart, they are very talented and they will showcase the great talent they have,” Mr. Vanterpool promised.
