Umoja Host, Cromwell Smith says Saw's lyrics are attacks on the family structure and on relationships
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - With music being a dominant factor in the way people around the world live their lives, the lyrics fabricated by Jamaican self-proclaimed Queen of the Dancehall Lady Saw that, "all men have two women", is seen as an attack on the family structure and on relationships.

This is the view of Cromwell Smith aka Edju En Ka who said he heard those lyrics while attending the BVI Music Festival on May 26, 2012 and is advocating that entertainers performing in the Virgin Islands (VI) should have good values.

Saw was among the performers on Saturday night at the festival and as usual belted out many provocative tunes and "chats" to the audience including the now controversial message.

On his radio talk show Umoja aired last evening May 31, 2012 on a local radio station, referring to a line in Saw’s lyrics “All men have more than 2 woman so women must keep more than 1 man”, Smith stated that if people believe the statement and that is where society is, then the trust between men and women is destroyed and the world is in serious trouble.

The outspoken host added that according to the effectiveness of the performer’s message, the opportunity for men to form a relationship built on the fundamentals that can ensure a healthy relationship is impossible and men will never get married.

“It is an attack on the family structure and on relationships.”

Smith stated that while attending the fest and the above lyrics were being sung, at the same time, he noticed that some women in the crowd started to ponder, “thinking if this statement is true or not, should I try it, what could go wrong?”

He added that the type of lyrics and the things promoted by Saw can lead to a negative effect in the long run for men, families and life on a whole. “People have already been affected by this kind of ideology and philosophy,” said the host.

Entertainers should have positive values

Smith stated that the Government puts lots of money in bringing artists to the country who reflect values that should not be encouraged in the Virgin Islands.

“The whole idea of entertainment in the VI is just looked at as a ‘money thing’ instead of the educational, cultural and spiritual values.”

In relation to some of the young local acts in the VI, he stated that their content and lyrics are very negative. “I’ve heard some positive ones but there are negative ones as well.”

He suggested that if one artist is not capable of giving positive content then another artist should be hired.

He said that the local entertainers adapt bad traits from international music performers and they need to know the difference between right and wrong, good and bad.

In giving an example, he said that there are songs on the radio that are promoting very heavily, one night stands.

He stated that with the youths of the VI listening to those songs, it can have a negative effect on their behaviours.

“Because of all these factors, the Virgin Islands will be suffering and they can’t connect the suffering with the music. A bunch of young girls getting pregnant, marriages breaking apart, people contracting diseases and society will be of a non-monogamy nature.”

Some of these radio personalities/hosts need a da*n life. Really??? Lady Saws lyrics gonna make me go out and cheat on my wife? So my decision making as a rationale adult and choosing to pursue my own interests takes a back seat to what a popping on the radio?? Wow, I hope I don't ever hear her singing about robbing a bank..SMH....Don't get me wrong I understand what these simpleminded hosts are trying to insinuate but it seems that is the turn society seems to be taking of simply finding scapegoats and excuses to justify their own actions and behaviours. Society is truly becoming pathetic with this blame game crap. People are grown adults if they want to cheat they will whether they are suggested it in a song or not. The REAL IDEOLOGY that is affecting society is the lack of owning up to ones actions and responsibility. Everything now is nothing more than "well it ain't my fault bacause", that is what society has become. This passing of accountability to third parties is the real issue.

I 100% agree with you 'Guest'...I guess we all need to talk watching tv shows/movies because last time i check some of them carry the same message also. According to him, we need to all just live on a deserted island with no sort of technology because we are not rational people who can make our own decisions- we need an entertainer to make it for us.

So because some people are easily influenced you think by potentially banning an artist from coming or anything of the like will protect them? To Cromwell if that is what you believe then censor the world. Cut off all communication to the internet, radio, and tv. As a matter of fact Mr. Smith, I heard that the evil T.V. (part of the axis of influential evil) is secretly plotting a take over the minds of all BVIslanders with another negative notion. Now although these reports have not been confirmed we heard through our secret spy the radio using advertisements about evil shows coming that may warp our little minds. So Mr. Smith strap on your cape and go save us all from our own inability to think for ourselves.

While I agree with your statement "Guest", we as BVIslanders fail to realize that there are some very shallow minded people in the BVI and any little wind that blows will knock them off their feet.

Lady Saw is telling the truth. I know of so many men that have up to three women and making babies with all. So many men with girlfriends and men with wives have asked me to be in relationships with them, but I refused all. These men on this island have no respect for their families.

So are you saying, that if I asked you to help me change my tire or something like that, I must sleep with you or you would not help me? That is why when I have to ask a man for help with something I offer him cash money to do it and some still ask for "wife" in return instead of the money.

They are called lyircs for a reason!!!! she is an entertainer not a counsellor. HOWEVER, she isn't telling a lie either because most men (NOT ALL) do have more than 1 woman so that's not a big shock oh Mr. HOST! u need to talk about more important things than the woman's lyrics because MOST PEOPLE sing along with her and love her beats. That doesn't mean we are going to take her advice-ONCE AGAIN SHE IS AN ENTERTAINER NOT A DAMN COUNSELLOR TO PEOPLE'S RELATIONSHIP!

Dude people do know the difference between right and wrong but apparently you are not up to date with this era. Young talents sing about things that their peers would like to hear. It's not that they are trying to influence them it's just that if they sing about global warming or go green no one would buy their music. Most people do have positive music but the reality of it is that they are merely ENTERTAINERS not THERAPISTS for people's relationships. Get a life, Smith..People like YOU are the reason some intl artists never wants to come back here.

When you go out and get an artist like Lady Saw, you should know that you are buying pure slackness and sex and discussions about private parts. Ask the Tourist Board THIS IS WHAT DRIVES TOURISM IN THE BVI. A REPORT WAS DONE BY SKELTON AND THE REPORT SAID TOURIST WANT US TO BRING LADY SAW!!! This is crazy, Look at St Kitts line up and come again, loads of great reggae artist With all the raping, aids and broken families why encourage it???

When bring in artists every year and then after they come you hear all the critics. When all are different with different morals and teachings so why critisize. We have to learn to appreciate all types of music, if we keep shooting down every artist who sings about something we dont like we will soon find ourselves back to the days when we dont have any coming in. I will suggest to anyone attending these functions, do you research before going and stay the hell home if you are going to have a problem with the music.

Cromwell, I agree with you. That woman and her demons should have been left wherever she was. All this spirits need are door ways. We must be very careful with whom we allow on these shores we call home.

Cromwell I agree with you I think we need to become like North Korea where the Government limits and controls everything down to free speech(like yours) so nothing netagive is imparted on the minds of its citizens other than what they want. I like how North Korea limits media, tv, internet and has cut their population off from the rest of the world for their own protection from the evil, evil devices of the world. We should all follow North Korea's example and stifle the people in a blanket of censorship. Although they will live like drones unable to think for themselves at least they will live right?? After all there are those dangerous Lady Saw type artists out there, who may say something that may take away from how we want these mindless drones to think.....

I fully disagree with what Cromwell is saying. The culture in the BVI for years now (before lady saw and before the internet) has been the acceptance of men having a second woman; even 3 and 4. I always say I don't know why they don't allow them to marry more than one. It is known and accepted by all. This has nothing to do with influence. It happens from the most influential in Government and society down to the least influential. It is a shame and embarrassment. They can't find anyone to blame for this but themselves and need to work on the family foundation in the BVI. Its a shame I say again. And shame on you Cromwell for trying to blame this on anything else besides ourselves and our selfishness and lack of respect for the family.

Oh Oh that's how you feel Mr. Smith, I grow up seeing so many men with more than one woman and it was no lyrics that cause it. Back in the days it had no sort of entertainers like what we have now but the men back then was making babies all over and have there wife at home.

Look! Music and movies does have a certain level of influence on their audience, however it's up to the audience how much of that influence is maifested in their lives and the lives of others surrounding them. And Lady Saw and many other artists are the voice(s) for the members of society, most men have multiple women, that ain't no lie, but that word "all" shouldn't be taken literally, that word "all" should be taken figuratively.

As a single woman living on Tortola for almost 8 years I can vouch that the men here are far from monogomous. I've been approached by so many married men it is unbeleivable. I've met some who pretend they are single and others who are forthcoming about their indescretions. I've been told there are few men and if I want a relationship then I best accept them married as they are or be alone. You know what? I choose to be single because there is no chance in hell I would ever be caught in a relationship with a man who has no morals or values. I'll hold out rather than be the one sitting at home alone on Christmas morning or New Years Eve while my boyfriend is home with his wife and children. Furthermore, I must say that the women who turn a blind eye to their man's promiscuity and in doing so condone their behavior, they too add to the problem and the downfall of the sanctity of marriage.

Most career women in the BVI are choosing to become involved in polygamous relationships because of a lack of suitable men in the BVI.

It's sad to see the mentality of a lot of people here. I truly hope ya'll aren't true representations of Virgin Islanders. Any medium (music, t.v, books, articles) CAN and WILL have an affect on the mind. Now if you are strong enough where there is no influence then cheers! Pour the guava berry wine and have a good time. However in real life, there are many folks who are easily influenced by what they feed their minds. Host, I feel u on this one. Those that question your way of thinking part of the slack out crew anyway, cud put all them on an island and let them slack out if they so desire, simple!
