ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Digicel BVI’s PR and Sponsorship Executive Katasha Melville has confirmed that Digicel is now allowing calls to be made via the WhatsApp platform for purchasers of the company’s new ‘All In’ data bundle and post-paid customers.

“Customers are able to do WhatsApp calling when they buy the data bundle. Also post-paid customers are able to do WhatsApp calling,” she confirmed in a comment to this news site yesterday November 6, 2015, adding that persons with the company’s Mifi router can also make calls via WhatsApp.

“Right now it is not open to our entire base but post-paid and those with the ‘All In’ plan and persons with the data service in their homes are able to as well,” she said of WhatsApp calling.

Digicel yesterday November 6, 2015 announced innovative new plans which allow customers to surf, stream, share, talk and text in convenient All In plans. These plans are unique to Digicel and for a weekly or monthly fee allow prepaid customers endless free WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter in addition to large data bundles. Also included are calls to any local number or internationally to over 20 countries, plus local and worldwide texts.

This news site made a couple of test calls and can confirm that WhatsApp calls can be made from Digicel’s post-paid plan.

A press release from Digicel said that with Digicel’s innovative new ALL IN plans customers choose from ‘Large, XL or XXL’, for seven or thirty days which have been exclusively launched in the BVI to suit the needs of VI smartphone owners.

“All plans have generous talk, text and data allowances in addition to endless free access to popular social media such as WhatsApp Messenger, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. ALL IN plans start from as low as $17 for 7 days and users are then able to surf, stream, share, talk & text as much as they need,” the release said.

'We've listened to the people' - Conor Looney

CEO of Digicel BVI, Conor Looney said “Get ALL IN with Digicel and you’ve got no worries; we met with and listened to people in the BVI over the last few weeks and it is them who have created these plans. People told us ‘we want plans that have everything included’, ‘have everything we need all in’, and that’s exactly what we have launched. People want to have choices and these plans make it very easy because you get what you want for as long as you want.”

The release said once customers decide the duration of their ALL IN plan they then choose from Large, XL or XXL options based on the amount of data, minutes and text messages they need for a week or a month.

Up to a few weeks ago, Digicel was one of two telecommunications companies which were blocking access to WhatsApp and Skype calls using the customers’ data plan.

Recently, Minister for Communications and works Honourable Mark H. Vanterpool (R4) stated that while he is not in support of the company’s actions it’s a matter that has been entrusted in the hands of the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (TRC) and he was not going to interfere.

“By giving free access to WhatsApp messenger, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, it frees up our customers’ data plans for other purposes making their data last much longer on the BVI’s fastest and most reliable data network,” Digicel said.

“Customers said they want to be able to talk and text to any network locally and internationally so we have included that too. You can call any number on any network in the BVI plus over 20 other countries, including Digicel Caribbean numbers, the USA, UK and the USVI, as well as text worldwide, all in one plan.”

According to the release, Digicel’s prepaid customers can purchase a new ALL IN plan at the touch of a button via the MyDigicel App, or alternatively activate a plan in seconds by dialling *284# from their Digicel smartphone. “Customers can also come in to meet the Digicel team at any Digicel store in Tortola or Virgin Gorda, visit digicelbvi.com or follow Digicel BVI on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.”

We are still getting screwed by Digicel and many can't even see it. They should not include it in no plan. It should be an outright free service. This is trickery to make us pay for it down the road in a smart way. Don't be fooled...with their nonsense about "ALL IN PLAN". This is pure gimmick. I am not sold nor impressed the least. Customers should not have to select any special plan to get WhatsApp.

DIGICEL and these bloody companies take good people for fools, they have not complied with the TRC and the SPINELESS TRC doing NOTHING, in the Eastern Caribbean their regulators told LIME & Flow that they cannot raise their rates and they had to comply but the SPINELESS TRC in the BVI just doing NOTHING to further or protect the consumers in the BVI.

This is the last straw i am leaving DIGICEL first thing Monday morning.

What's app calling means that they would lose money. I told someone they had to find away to hike up their fees before they would allow it.......so said so done. Thanks for proving my point.

There is no problem with a business not wanting to lose money but there is a problem with charging for a service which is free in every other part of the world, especially something that they have no copyright to.

I cannot see why in the BVI a company stating the give a free service ,it was free before they mention it is given free. Get the internet fix in East. Listen to who , there is a lot going on. At the 28 of each month they will slow down you phone call restricted it to only local call I need to talk with this new boss first thing in the morning.

This is non sense if you ask me. I live abroad and when I go into a store to get a phone plan, the customer service doesn't ask me if I want whatsapp calling etc in my plan, they ask you how many gigs per month is more suitable to you and they show you exactly the rates for each plan and you choose. U can do whatever you want with the amount of gigs that you signed up for, however if you go over they notify you of this and then they charge you the overage which then shows up on your next billing cycle. Some of these carriers are robbing people blind and they don't even see it. smh
