PASEA ESTATE, Tortola, VI- Word reaching our news centre from sources within the BVI Ports Authority’s Board of Directors is that former Deputy Director Akeem R. Pickering will be the new Managing Director of the BVI Ports Authority (BVIPA).

Mr Pickering, whose contract as Deputy Director was not renewed a few years ago, is expected to replace the current acting Managing Director Mr Dean B. Fahie. It is unclear if Mr Fahie will revert to his substantive post of Deputy Director.

The incoming Director applied for the post, was interviewed, and recommended by the Board. The Minister for Communications and Works Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5) has taken the matter to Cabinet where it is expected to be approved.

He is qualified

Mr Pickering, a Virgin Islander, holds two Bachelor’s Degrees. One of his degrees is in Information Technology and the other is in Business Management. He also holds many certificates in different aspects of port management, operations, and best practices. He has worked at the BVI Ports Authority for some 13 years and rose to the rank of Deputy Director.

There are reports that the Governor and the United Kingdom (UK) have their eyes on many senior posts in the Territory, including those of the VI ports, as a former Commissioner of Police’s name was already floated.

Since its formation, the BVI Ports Authority has had local Directors except for one time.

Mr Pickering was asked to comment on the reports, and he acknowledged he was interviewed for the post.

Minister Rymer did not respond to our request for comment.

This guy has an ego problem and an axe to grind but once kept in check he can work out. The UK & Governor is more interested in the Head of Customs, DPP, AG, Prison, PS, & Police post as these give them control to do well organized mischief that allows them to keep their hands clean through a bloodless take over. BVI needs to wake up.

This one could pass in this post but the former Commissioner of Police needs to be Investigated not rewarded as Head of Customs.

Send the UK nationals for all the top spots. Obviously we cannot govern ourselves or be trusted in tops positions.

It is about time! You guys have done this young man very wrong for many years! He deserves this opportunity! If he was not passed over for cronies like Maynard and Samuels, the BVI would not have faced the international embarrassment we did under the HC. They only wanted yes man and not people who know their jobs and would push back.

Same for Koy Levons at airport. Same for Skelton in Tourism. Kudos to you Akeem! It is your time to shine.

May God cover you as you perform your duties to the highest of standard possible as you lean on Him for guidance and wisdom and strength to side step any temptation to do wrong. You have always been upstanding in your deeds. Lean on God and do what is right for selling your soul for riches and missing out on eternal life is not worth it. Also a good name is hard to reclaim after it has been soiled with misdeeds and remember you have a young family to set an example for. Set the example for them to follow even on the job. Treat all equally, have respect for all and work for all to have better working conditions.
Continue to be someone who can be looked up to for remember the sins of the parents are visited upon the children.
Sometimes we as parents wonder what is happening to our children and we have forgotten that our sins (in mistreatment of others, our lies and misdeeds) will be visited upon our children.
Be a Virgin Islander that the country can be proud of, for we are a spectacle to the World! We may be small but we can continue to climb as a nation. God's blessings and coverage in Jesus name.
