Airgasm & Libertas victorious in 2025 Nanny Cay Round Tortola Race
The boats were split into two fleets with 4 trimarans, 1 catamaran and 6 monohulls, all starting the race in very light winds. It was a year of firsts for many, with new boats and new faces taking on the challenge for the first time.
Libertas was gone with the wind!
The monohulls started at 9:35 AM, and it was very slow progress as they made their way east up the channel, as rain showers sucked out the wind. Fortunately, everyone persevered and the wind did eventually fill in to a pleasant low teens.
The Libertas crew managed to find some magic and sneak around Beef Island whilst the rest of the fleet were still seeking the breeze and were not going to be caught. Libertas claimed line honours and the overall win with a corrected time of 4 hours 41 minutes and 26 seconds.
A warm welcome was extended to Alejandro Chometowski’s Y Por Qué No? and Paul Smedley’s Queen of the Stars who entered the race for the first time. Y Por Qué No? came home in second place after racing for over 6 and half hours and just in the nick of time, with less than 7 minutes left before the time limit, Dr Robin E. Tattersall with his team on Jitterbug crossed the finish line to claim third, beating Queen of the Stars by just over a minute on corrected time.
"Congratulations to the crews of Rythmn and Blues and Off the Clock, both crewed by RBVIYC adult sailing programme trainees under the guidance of Kay Reddy and our coaches James Campbell and Meg Thickett. Unfortunately, the light winds (and disappearing daylight) were not their friend on this occasion. A big thank you to Horizon Yacht Charters for your support and helping us give this opportunity, the Royal BVI Yacht Club stated in a press release.
Airgasm comes first!
The multihull fleet started at 10:35 AM and, like the monos, had a very slow start to their race.
First home was Barney Crook’s Airgasm, completing his lap in just under 4 hours. As the fastest boat in the fleet, he had to wait for the rest to come home, but in the end had done enough to take the win.
Next up was Chris Haycraft’s Ting a Ling2, but it was the smallest boat in the fleet, the Hobie 18, sailed by Andrew Thompson and Christian Thompson that would come through to claim second place, edging out Ting 2 by just over a minute on corrected time. Fourth and fifth went to Jerk Pork and Ting a Ling.
